Good Luck everyone in this years AFL Season!
The Cincinnati Bengals are coming off 2 straight Wildcard Playoff exits. The first one in the 2013 Season saw an exit to the New England Patriots and PrymeTyme while this past season saw a 3 point loss and exit to none other than Josh's Indianapolis Colts. This offseason the Bengals front office made sure there was more depth on the rosters and that they fixed up a few holes in order to make a harder push at the playoffs and looking for their 3rd straight AFC North title. They would start by closing a deal that sent the Cardinals 1st Round Pick (7th Overall) to the Seattle Seahawks for stud OLB Bruce Irvin. This move was followed by 3 major Free Agency signings. The front office was able to bring in CB Brent Grimes early on to give Leon Hall a partner in crime to keep WRs out of the endzone. Grimes is expected to use his great hands and coverage skills to fill the holes left by previous starting CB Tarrell Brown. Next the Bengals would be able to pickup veteran DT Justin Smith to come in as a secondary DT to the well performing Henry Melton. His veteran presence may have a couple things to teach Melton during the season. Lastly, and most importantly, the Bengals were able to fill their biggest hole. The signing of WR Randall Cobb to a 6-year $109 million deal would mean they now have 2 brilliant threats at the WR position between him and Stephen Hill while still keeping veteran WR Sidney Rice on contract and young risers WRs Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones on the depth chart. This WR core will give QB Geno Smith a full season of talented targets and take much of the pressue off HBs Leveon Bell and Alex Green. Expect the Bengals to threepeat their AFC North title and head to the playoffs once again. Season Prediction: 11-5.
After losing in this years AFC Wild Card Round, Cincinatti Bengal MLB Navorro Bowman has been working out with teammates and participating in various media related events. Most recently, we were able to catch up with Navorro at this years NFL Awards Ceremony where he was awarded with the AFC Defensive Player of the Year Award. This season his 95 tackles, 11 for a loss, 2 sacks, 6 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles were tops in the league. We asked Navorro about whether he felt his Bengals had a strong shot at repeating as AFC North Division winners in the coming 2014 season and he responded "Well we really don't know what to expect from the Ravens this season, their new front office is going to change the look and style we are used to. In terms of Pittsburgh and Cleveland we know what to expect mostly, these are groups of guys weve seen before and faced off against before. I think if we work hard like last season and take it week-by-week and prepare for every team we should have a good chance at repeating. I know our goal this season is gonna be to better that 11-5 record and get through the Wild Card and hopefully even an AFC Bye." Navorro really seems to have taken over as a major leader on this young roster. Veteran HB Matt Forte was brought in this offseason in a deal from Chicago that saw DT Henry Melton and WR Stevie Johnson come over as well. Matt was also at the NFL Awards supporting his friends and peers, he had a chance to ask him about the move and if playing in Orange and Black would better his game this season and he had this to say, "Playing in Chicago was amazing, I wouldn't change it for the world, there was something so special about playing in front of fans and teammates that really appreciate you. And although I have only been in Cincy for a short few weeks, I already know they will be the same. I don't need to get all the snaps or scores but to know you are part of something special like what the Bengals are building here is something every guy wants during his career in the NFL. I think this team has a great shot at going places this season and don't be surprised if they sit near the top of the AFC again."
Its quite clear that the Bengals players are showing confidence and no regrets over last seasons arguable shortcoming in the Wild Card. Despite rumors of a trade involving QB Andy Dalton moving to last seasons worst team, the 0-16 Jaguars, he has come to camp really working hard and really getting involved in offseason workouts with his recievers, running various routes and working on their timing. He says he would like to finish the season with less interceptions and less sacks. Which is why the Bengals had to release the large salary of aging LG Andrew Whitworth and convert young RG Kevin Zeitler over to LG. This should give Andy the protection he needs, given the rest of the line plays as well as they can.
This was not the only move the Bengals made this season to really help their team out, the Bengals made a questionable deal as most would say by dealing newly signed TE Jimmy Graham over to the Jets in exchange for big DE Muhammad Wilkerson, who they later converted to a DT. Owner PickkSixx had this to say about the move "We know alot of teams out there would not move a huge offensive threat like Jimmy, but we felt that bringing in the young talented Wilkerson we are able to really bolster the defensive line and continue to get at the Quarterback. Personally, had we been the management staff in Week 1 of the season we would not have brought Jimmy in nor immediatley sign him to a long-term extension, but we came into something we knew we needed to change to fit our style, and we did just that. Moving Jimmy was a mutual decision between the front office and Jimmy, he knew he needed a new atmosphere if he wanted to get the kind of looks he wanted in games. And we gave him just that, a new opportunity." As Pickk mentioned, bringing in DT Wilkerson and DT Melton really gives their strong line a chance at being one of the most dominant in the NFL. Last season DE's Carlos Dunlap and Michael Johnson combined for 23 sacks (12 and 11 respectfully) and verteran DT Domata Peko (who was also in the deal with the Jets) was able to get a few as well. Last season Wilkerson picked up 10 sacks in New York and after his switch to DT, the Bengals believe that number will increase this season.
Everyone stay tuned for the Bengals as we update you here on DaddyLeagues AFL over the course of the season. And thanks for reading. #WhoDey
