Panthers under new leadership

Charlotte Observer

Coach Marv was presented with an opportunity he couldn’t pass up, Commish Q reached out to the former championship winning coach to come out of retirement and return to the SFL. The former Cardinals coach passed on a chance to coach the Colts and wanted for the right opportunity. The opportunity is here, the Carolina Panthers.

We recently met with the controversial coach for a sit down interview.

Charlotte Observer-You’ve won over 15 titles in various leagues, what made you come back to the infamous SFL.

Coach Marv-Commish Q and I have been friends for 20 years, I have the upmost respect for him and the league he is running. I coached in many leagues, starting from the NFL 2k5 days and SFL is at the very top in terms of competition and how it is run. You have legendary coaches like Q, LBZ, AC and Pops. I also heard that guys like Chan are amazing coaches. To have a chance to rebuild the Panthers is the challenge I want. Right now they are at the bottom of the league and saddled with bad contracts. The last coach must of had a drinking problem, that’s the only excuse for some of these contracts. We will clean house and rebuild the team the right way.

Charlotte Observer-What direction are you planning on taking the team? You only signed one minor free agent and had the number 1 pick in the draft.

Coach Marv-My style is to build organically through the draft. Free agents are good for depth but not to build the core of your team. We will take our time and this might be a 2 or 3 season rebuild. I’m changing the defense back to the 4-3 and the offense will be take advantage of Cam Newton’s talent. Christian McCaffrey is a prolific pass catcher the offense will utilize his talents. WR DJ Moore has star potential and we intend to help him progress to an elite talent.

Charlotte Observer-There are rumors that superstar MLB Luke Kuechly is on the trade block. Is there any truth to those rumors?

Coach Marv-Luke is the best MLB in football but any player can be moved for the right place. I’m not actively looking to move him. First, I’ll like to sit down with him and see what he can bring to my defense this season. A talent like Luke is impossible to replace.

Charlotte Observer-Our final question is about the draft, how do you feel about the talent you added?

Coach Marv-I have two words for you, Sean French. I considered going corner with the top pick but we have serviceable corners for now. But right now we need another pass rusher. Bernard Copeland(last years 1st rounder) will team with French. We intend on having one of the best young pass rushing duos. I was able to fortify the o line added a starting center with star potential. Also, we were able to add a great backup pass rushing DT and DE to inject youth on our D Line. I wanted to add some zone corners but wasn’t able to. Because of this I will have to adjust my scheme to take advantage of our current corners man skills with more pass rush pressure so we don’t leave them on an island too long.

Charlotte Observer-Thank you for your time coach and good luck this season.
