The Rookie Report: Who's Ahead of the Curve

Through 4 weeks of the SMLP season, some rookies are really standing out so far.  Let's take a dive into the leading rookies through the first quarter of the season.

Offensive Rookie of the Year Leaders:

New England Quarterback Terrelle McPherson

He is 2nd in passing among rookies with 1,066 passing yards and 7 TDs but he is leading the rookies in rushing with 147 rushing yards.  McPherson's worst game was his first game in which he threw 2 picks and only 1 TD.  After that, he has been a steady passer and has not had a game under 70% completion. To me, he is the front runner to win offensive rookie of the year.

Las Vegas Quarterback Hudson Nolan

A close second is another QB and the top pick in the draft.  It is Quarterback Hudson Nolan from the Las Vegas Raiders.  He is the top rookie passer and is 5th in passing yards in the whole league.  In his last two games, he has been racking up the yards (781 yards) but he has thrown 10 INTs in those games.  He needs to correct his vision and stop throwing to the other team if he wants to win the award.

Buffalo Bills WR Ben Rice

This rookie WR started out on fire with a 93 yard game and a 127 yard game.  The defenses have picked up on his talent and have held him in the last two games.  The biggest knock on his game is lack of touchdowns.  He needs to put in some extra reps with Josh Allen so he can soar up the rankings.

Defensive Rookie of the Year Leaders:

Atlanta Falcons ROLB Dylan Everett

He has taken the league by storm.  In his first game he record 3 sacks.  That is one way to announce your presence to the league.  Through 4 games, he is leading all rookies in sacks (5 total) and tied for 3rd in the entire league.  Right now, he is the overwhelming leader for this award.

Atlanta Falcons SS Jose Washington

In his 2nd Pro game ever, he recorded 2 INTs and returned 1 for a touchdown.  He is the leading rookie tackler and interception leader.  A 2nd round pick is really proving the Falcons right for picking him.

Kansas City Chiefs SS Reggie Hobson

He hasn't been outstanding but he has been a solid addition for the Chiefs.  He had a pick in his first pro game and is a very sure tackler.  He is 3rd among rookies in tackles and it seems like he is trending upward.

Through the 1st quarter of the year, those are the rookies that have stood out.  Maybe they can keep it up or maybe they will hit the rookie wall.
