Now the the dust has settled on the 49ers playoff loss and the focus shifts from this season to next, let's take a look back at the season that was. Despite an ownership change in the midst of a playoff run, the 49ers never missed a beat and rolled into the playoffs with momentum. Unfortunately the Lions were the better team last night and the playoff run ended, but the season was far from a disappointment.
On the offensive side of the ball, the 49ers became one of the most potent offenses in the SMLP despite losing their top wide receiver and star running back both for significant time. Jimmy Garoppolo led the SMLP in passing yards and touchdown. He will likely be named Quarterback of the Year for the NFC. Despite missing half of the season, rookie running back Dion Carrington figures to be a top candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year in the NFC. Dante Pettis stepped up and performed like a top 10 receiver in both yards and touchdowns. Alexander Mattison also showed flashes during his stint as the starting running back during Carrington's absence.
The defense played extremely well throughout the year. There is a long list of guys who really made an impact. Kwon Alexander was making a push at Defensive Player of the Year as he led the team with eight interceptions, until a severe injury ended his season. Nick Bosa led the defense with 11 sacks on the year, headlining what was a really solid defensive front seven. Three different defensive players were even able to get into the end zone.
As the focus shifts to the offseason, the 49ers do have some work to do. Even with all the positive things that happened this season, there are still many areas which could be improved. Luckily, the core of the team will still be under contract next season, however, they will be losing depth at wide receiver and cornerback. Two positions which are already weak areas in need of improvement. If the 49ers are unable to address either of these areas in Free Agency, look for them to try and make a move on draft night to add a playmaker or two. With very few players of their own to re-sign, the cap space should be there to make some moves. It should be a very interesting offseason, hopefully leading to continued success in regular season and beyond.
