Despite a strong finish to the season and momentum gaining, the 49ers fell to the Lions 30-10. The 49ers were unable to get anything going on offense and ended the game with six dropped passes. Once again the defense gave up over 275 yards through the air and this time they weren't able to keep pace on offense.
The offense struggled to get into any kind of rhythm with rookie running back Dion Carrington returning from a long stint on the injury list. Carrington was only able to contribute 31 yards on the ground and 4 through the air. Jimmy Garoppolo did his best to keep the 49ers in the game, but the receivers were no help. The six dropped passes were the difference between Garoppolo going 9 for 18 or 15 for 18. That could have been a huge swing in the game. The Lions kept the 49er offense off balance all game.
The defense did not fair much better. Once again they gave up over 275 yards through the air, including seven catches to Tyrell Williams. Second year wide receiver Connor Dillon added 95 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers defense was unable to get any pressure on Lions quarterback Cam Newton, and he was able to complete 75% of his passes. The lone bright spot for the 49ers was an interception for Kirby McGill. Four other 49ers defenders were able to deflect passes, but none could hold onto the ball.
After this one and done playoff showing, the 49ers will try to put this game behind them and turn their focus on the draft. I expect that wide receiver and secondary will be the two areas they look to address in the offseason. Rumors are already circulating that they may try to move up in the draft to get an impact player at one of those positions. More information should be trickling out over the next few days and weeks.
