Playoff schedule nearly set

The SMLP Playoffs are almost upon us and the schedule is nearly set. With just a few Week 17 games remaining, things are starting to come into focus.  For 20 teams, the focus has shifted to the draft.  But for the twelve lucky teams, the season has not ended yet.

In the NFC, the schedule is set and teams are preparing.  The Wild Card round will feature the Detriot Lions hosting the San Francisco 49ers and the Atlanta Falcons traveling to Washington DC to take on the NFC East Champion Redskins.  Both Wild Card teams have better records than their Division Champion opponents so these have the potential to be some extremely exciting games.

Over in the AFC, things are not quite as set in stone.  The participants are set, but the seeding is still up in the air.  As it stands, the Raiders and the Colts will be the #3 and #4 seed.  Which one will be which can be decided in one game or through a couple other games remaining.  With a win, the Colts can lock up the #3 seed and take on the Chiefs in Indianapolis.  If the Colts can't defeat the Titans, then things get interesting.  If the Colts lose, both teams would have identical records.  Then next step in the tie-breaker system would be head to head.  Unfortunately these teams did not face off during the regular season so we move on to tie-breaker #2.  The second step is Conference record.  With a loss, the Colts would end up with an identical Conference record as the Chiefs.  We would then have to move to criteria #3.  This would be a comparison of the winning percentage against common opponents if there are a minimum of four.  In this case, they do meet the minimun criteria, however, once again their records are identical.  The next step is to compare strength of victory.  This is calculated by comparing the combined winning percentage of teams beaten.  As of this moment, the Raiders hold a slight advantage in this scenario.  Thier strenght of victory wins out at .602 - .580.  But here is where it gets interesting.  Not all of their opponents have finished their Week 17 games.  Essentially, a Colts loss means their playoff seeding could come down to a matchup between a 5-10 Dolphins squad and the 3-12 Seattle Seahawks.

With this crazy ending to the season, I can't wait to see what the playoffs have in store.
