It remains to be seen whether or not the 49ers will be playoff bound, but tonight they did their part. With a potential playoff birth on the line and a solid Buffalo Bills team in town, the 49ers came out and played as physical as we have seen them play during their time under the new ownership. They had to fend off multiple Bills attempts to come back and each time they were able to pull away. Tonight, they showed that they could make some noise if they end up in the playoffs.
Despite what looks like a solid game for the 49ers, the secondary continues to be a bit of an enigma. Once again they sat back and watched as an opposing offense racked up yards through the air. But once again, they were able to tighten up and make big plays to keep the game from getting too close. Jacoby Brissett threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns, however, he was also intercepted five times. He was also sacked six times. The spectacular running back tandem of Nick Chubb and Matt Brieda were anything but spectacular today. The 49ers had them bottled up for the most part, limiting them to a combined 46 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving. Neither player was able to get into the end zone.
On the other side of the field, the 49ers were extremely efficient once again. Jimmy Garoppolo was 10 for 16 for 213 yards and two touchdowns. His lone mistake was a poor read on an out route that was intercepted by T.White and returned for a touchdown. Aside from that blemish, he played a magnificent game. The real star of the game on offense for the 49ers was backup running back Alexander Mattison. In what is likely his last game as a starter, Mattison ran for 51 yards and added another 72 yards through the air. He scored a touchdown, both rushing and receiving. It remains to be seen what role he will have if the 49ers are in the playoffs and star rookie Dion Carrington returns from an ankle injury.
Many people in the Bay area were concerned about how the defense would handle the first game without Kwon Alexander. Well wonder no more because Christian Sam looked extremely comfortable in his first game with his new team. He totaled five tackles, including one tackle for loss. The defensive line added five sacks between Nick Bosa (3) and Solomon Thomas (2). Earl Thomas had 3 pass deflections and an interception to seal the game, but the game ball on defense went to Fred Warner who did a little bit of everything. He had one sack, one 90 yard interception returned for a touchdown, and one forced fumble.
With their regular season complete and an 11-5 record in the books, the 49ers will now wait and see how Rams finish their season and how the tie breakers fall. We will either be previewing an upcoming Wild Card Matchup or we'll give you an early look at who might be on the 49ers radar for the draft. Stay tuned, either way, we are excited for what's to come.
