49ers roll to another victory, but lose K.Alexander for the season

After the game, a locker room that should have been filled with happiness was instead quiet enough to hear a pin drop.  The team was gathered around awaiting an update on the status of star linebacker Kwon Alexander.  Their hope quickly turned to disappointment when they learned that his injury midway through the game would sideline him for the remainder of the season and hopefully not end his career.  Alexander sustained a compound fracture that hopefully will heal in time for the beginning of next season.

As far as the rest of the game, the 49ers continued to roll in their second game under new ownership.  Despite a rocky first quarter, they were able to settle down and get into a rhythm on offense.  Jimmy Garoppolo continued his MVP caliber season by going 16 for 25 and 324 yards.  He added another five touchdowns to his already league leading total.  Alexander Mattison once again filled in admirably for the injured Dion Carrington.  He had 129 yards and a touchdown on the ground and added another two catches for 41 yards in the passing game.  Three 49er receivers scored touchdowns today, with George Kittle and Tim Ash each scoring twice.

The defense was once again unable to shut down an opponent's passing attack.  This time it was the Giants Austin Seferian-Jenkins who had 113 yard and a touchdown on three catches.  Despite giving up quite a few yards, the defense was able to account for four interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown by Mike Montgomery.

Going forward, it remains to be seen who will step up to fill the hole left by Kwon Alexander.  Justin Reynolds replaced him for the remainder of the game, but the 4th year player out of Texas Tech is likely not the answer the 49ers want heading into a possible playoff game.  He is currently the backup left outside linebacker and the 49ers would like to keep him there.  Early rumblings say that the 49ers could give the Andre Smith, the 6th year player from UNC, a shot to prove himself in week 17.  If that doesn't work out, some names to keep an eye on are Dylan Cole and Christian Sam.  Either way, expect the 49ers to sign someone to fill the roster spot vacated when they placed Alexander on season ending Injured Reserve.
