Rookies of 91 Draft Summary

Rookies of Season One, Draft Results

QB Dion Bullocks:

After 4 QBs selected in the top 10, the 49ers – who traded Brock Purdy and drafted George Gilchrist at #3 – needed to address the QB situation. Bullocks was compared to a lesser version of Kyler Murray.   He was taken in the 1st round pick #17.  He is currently the starter for the 49ers. Bullocks has some tools to work on, but he definitely looks like he could be the face of the 49ers franchise.

HB Cole Sherels:

The Steelers went HB heavy in the draft, selecting at LEAST 4 HBs.  Cole Sherels was taken late in the 6th round, pick 27.  The Steelers drafted another HB a few picks later. The results of this selection was that Sherels was either a project they weren’t ready for or they felt Goodson was more ready for what the wanted. Sherels is currently sitting on the practice squad. With some good hand for the rookie, he might be a long term 3rd down back.

WR Earl Harrison:

While drawing comparisons to Will Fuller, Harrison was considered a mid-draft pick.  The Eagles looked to add more firepower at WR.  Harrison was selected in the 5th round at pick #10.  He’s currently the Eagles WR #4.

TE Daniel Schmidt:

Our first undrafted player out of our rookies, Daniel Schmidt was not projected to get selected in the draft, and it didn’t happen.  He is currently sitting on the Packers practice squad, but there seems to be little to no hope a future in the NFL for him.

LT Larry Hartman:

Hartman struggled all throughout college, and it reflected in the draft.  He went undrafted and is currently sitting on the Dolphins practice squad.  He has no upside, we fully expect him out of the league next year.

LG Rashaun Hail:

Hail was projected to go undrafted, but with the 12th pick in the 7th round, the Buccaneers took a chance on him and brought him on board.  He currently the back up for Elijah Klein, but some believe he might take over the spot at some point.

C Anthony Ford:

The oldest player in the draft, the center out of Arizona did not get selected and is currently on the practice squad of the Lions.  What is interesting for this case, he’s actually better than the back up center on the team at the moment.

RG Mack Ferrell:

USC project Ferrell is only 22 years old and decided to forgo his senior year to join the draft, I’m not sure why, he was not prepared for the NFL and he went undrafted. He is sitting on the Falcons practice squad and will probably be out of the league next year.

RT Andrew Jones:

Jones was projected to go undrafted, but the Bengals took him with the 10th pick in the 7th round.  He is currently on their practice squad, but he might get called up if there is any injuries.

RE Corey Dawson:

Dawson went into the draft possibly going undrafted and was told his draft stock dropped during the season.  That being said, the Eagles took him with the 16th pick in the 4th round.  He is now sitting as the back up to Milton Williams and could possibly over seat him in the future.

RE Stephen Jarrett:

Projected to be taking around the 5th round, the Cardinals selected Jarrett with the 19th pick in the 4th round.  Jarrett is currently on the main roster but is listed as the back up DT to Nnadi.  Which he seems to be way undersized to be at position.

DT Henry Burgess:

I don’t know why he decided to declare himself early for the draft, he is absolutely not ready. He went undrafted as projected and is sitting on the Commanders practice squad.  While having some youth, he will be out of the league in a couple of years and likely will never take a snap.

MLB Danny Holcombe:

The young Holcombe was projected to go in the 3rd or 4th round, but the Patriots liked the physicality of the young man and drafted him in the 1st round.  They immediately moved him to the MLB position from LOLB. Despite this, the Patriots currently have him listed as the #3 MLB on the depth chart. We expect him to be a pro bowler one day.

LOLB Steven James:

James was projected to go undrafted and he in fact did.  After the draft, the Steelers signed him to their active roster and moved him to the OLB position. He’s currently backup rookie Daniel Beasley.  Based on this, we don’t see any long term production from him but he could definitely have some impact plays here and there.

ROLB Victor Castle:

Projected to be a 3rd round pick in the draft the Chiefs did exactly that.  With the 13th pick in the 3rd round, he was told her would be their future starter. He currently sitting behind Drue Tranquill but we expect the change to Castle to happen eventually.

CB Matt Johnston:

An underwhelming player out of Mississippi State, he went undrafted.  He is currently sitting on the Bengals practice squad and doesn’t seem to have much hope of seeing the field this season, maybe ever.

FS Pat Weaver:

Weaver was projected to go undrafted, and he did just that. While being 21, if someone wanted to build a project safety, he might be the guy. 6’1” 84 speed could be a project. I don’t see anyone wanting to take that project on.  He might be on an active roster next year, but I’m not counting on it.

SS Steve Hart:

Projected to go in the 1st or 2nd round, the Dolphins selected him in the 2nd round with the 18th pick.  He is currently the starting SS.  He’s having a really good start to the season with potential of rookie of the year in sights.

This concludes the rookie draft summary. We will look at them at the end of the season.
