The Mock Draft

Last day, a few hours before the draft time, I’m a crunch.  This isn’t my best or most thorough mock, but it’ll do.

  1. Los Angeles Rams
  • Team Needs: QB, RE, LE, ROLB, CB, WR, TE, RG, RT
  • Key Losses: RE – Justin Houston, RT – Rob Havenstein, HB – Cam Akers, WR – Van Jefferson, CB – Jalen Ramsey
  • Key Acquisitions: FS – Justin Simmons, LG – Cody Whitehair, C – Mitch Morse
  • Projected pick: QB – Joshua Brackett
  • Thoughts: I think Rams could easily look at Stafford, who should be gone after this season, and say “maybe one more season?” but I think they are ready for the future now.  They had rumors or Foote and Mathews, but I think Brackett is ready to start day one, despite having the lowest ceiling of the 3 top QBs.
  1. Carolina Panthers
  • Team Needs: QB, C, ROLB, RE
  • Key Losses: WR – Julio Jones, HB – Samaje Perine, RE – Bradley Chubb, WR – Calvin Ridley, ROLB – Shaq Thompson, K – Zane Gonzalez, RG – Austin Corbett, LOLB – Frankie Luvu, RE – Yetus Gross-Matos, CB – CJ Henderson, FS – Xavier Woods
  • Key Acquisitions: RT – Lane Johnson, FB – Kyle Juszczyk, WR – Keenan Allen, K – Tyler Bass, DT – Fletcher Cox, SS – Brandon Jones, HB – Cordarelle Patterson, RE – Justin Greenard
  • Projected pick: QB – Shane Matthews
  • Thoughts: I could be clever here and pretend that I’m not taking Matthews.  But, there is 0 upside that.  Worse case scenario someone offered the Rams more than I paid for the #2 pick for him, to which I’d snatch Brackett in a heartbeat.
  1. Minnesota Vikings
  • Team Needs: QB, DT, WR, LG, RG
  • Key Losses: WR – Adam Theilen, HB – Raheem Mostert, DT – Akiem Hicks, CB – Anthony Brown, HB – Jamaal Williams, K – Eddie Pineiro, MLB – Erik Kendricks, QB – Kirk Cousins, FB – C.J. Ham, LG – Ezra Cleveland, WR – K.J. Osborne, CB – Andrew Booth
  • Key Acquisitions: LE – Jason Hargrave, HB – D’Andre Swift, CB – Darrius Slay, HB – AJ Dillon, MLB – Leighton Vander Esch, ROLB - Khalil Mack, ROLB – Micah Parsons
  • Projected pick: QB – Matthew Foote
  • Thoughts: I can’t believe the Cowboys aren’t picking #3 after that trade. I digress.  The Vikings are going to be a super bowl threat for the next year or two if they get a QB. They get the highest ranked one at #3.  What an offseason.
  1. Seattle Seahawks
  • Team Needs: QB, LE, MLB, ROLB, CB, LG, RG
  • Key Losses: K – Jason Meyers, RG – Gabe Jackson, ROLB – Uchenna Nwosu, TE – Noah Fant, LG – Damien Lewis, MLB – Jordyn Brooks,
  • Key Acquisitions: None… and not for any good reason
  • Projected pick: RT – Vinny Gilbert
  • Thoughts: I don’t think the Seahawks management will show up for the draft tonight. This they will get an auto pick to the BPA, which will be Gilbert.
  1. Arizona Cardinals
  • Team Needs: LE, RE, DT, LOLB, ROLB, WR
  • Key Losses: CB – Kendall Fuller, WR – Robbie Anderson,
  • Key Acquisitions: None, Is the NFC West still in vacation mode?
  • Projected pick: ROLB – Kevin Bowe
  • Thoughts: I’m hoping we see some good drafting work from the Cardinals as they disappeared from the offseason.  There a few big holes in this team, but they could either grab Kevin Bowe here or a WR to have more than 1 threat.
  1. Kansas City Chiefs
  • Team Needs: LE, RE, DT, LOLB, ROLB, WR
  • Key Losses: CB – Kendall Fuller, WR – Robbie Anderson,
  • Key Acquisitions: None, Is the NFC West still in vacation mode?
  • Projected pick: RE – Josh Tatum
  • Thoughts:  The pick from the controversial Patrick Mahomes.  The Chiefs have tons of young talent, but the defensive 7 needs address right now.
  1. Arizona Cardinals
  • Team Needs: See Above
  • Key Losses: See Above
  • Key Acquisitions: See Above
  • Projected pick: ROLB – Stanley Wiggins
  • Thoughts: I’m going to double down on OLBs. They are needed here in Arizona.
  1. Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Team Needs: QB, LE, RE, CB
  • Key Losses: SS – Eric Rowe, WR – Kendrick Bourne, FS – Duron Harmon, CB – Ahkello Witherspoon, RE – Cameron Heyward, LOLB - T.J. Watt
  • Key Acquisitions: ROLB – Matt Milano, WR – Michael Pittman Jr
  • Projected pick: CB – Cedric Avril
  • Thoughts:  A nice playoff run came up short this season for the Steelers, but getting a new QB to replace Pickette isn’t the answer this draft.  Look for the first defensive back off there board here.
  1. Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Team Needs: LE, MLB, ROLB, SS, WR, TE, LT, RT
  • Key Losses: None
  • Key Acquisitions: SS – Tre Flowers, CB – C.J. Henderson
  • Projected pick: WR – Joe Molden
  • Thoughts: Moving off of Ridley, they could still use some young moldable talent here.  Looks for some sort of offensive player.
  1. San Francisco 49ers
  • Team Needs: ROLB, CB
  • Key Losses: FB – Kyle Juszczyk, DT – Arik Armstead, CB – Jason Verrett, K – Matt Gay, ROLB – Dre Greenlaw, HB – Elijah Mitchell
  • Key Acquisitions: CB – Cordale Flott, LT – Garrett Bolles, RE – Leonard Williams
  • Projected pick: ROLB – Dillon Pryor
  • Thoughts: The 49ers are still a solid team.  They don’t have a  lot of holes.  FB is a need, but 0 chance they get one if the 1st round, maybe not even in the draft at all.  The 9ers bolster that defense with Pryor here
  1. Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Team Needs: See Above
  • Key Losses: See Above
  • Key Acquisitions: See Above
  • Projected pick: LE – Julius Williams
  • Thoughts: Still no QB, so, we look at Julius Williams help that front 7.
  1. Denver Broncos
  • Team Needs: QB, LOLB, TE, RT
  • Key Losses: LT – Garrett Boles, WR – Tim Patrick, MLB – Josey Jewell, WR – K.J. Hamler, LE – Jason Hargrave, FS – Justin Simmons, DT – DJ Jones
  • Key Acquisitions: DT – Arik Armstead, SS – Justin Reid, FS – John Johnson, MLB – C.J. Mosley, DT – BJ Hill, La’el Collins
  • Projected pick: TE – Evan Hubbard
  • Thoughts: Broncos could really use a new QB, Wilson has been better days.  A run of OLBs leaves a target for Wilson or protection for him.  I’m thinking we go game changer.
  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Team Needs: QB, RE, LOLB, WR, LT
  • Key Losses: WR – Chris Godwin, DT – Vita Vea, HB – Leonard Fornette, WR – Russell Gage
  • Key Acquisitions: LE – Emmanuel Ogbah, RG – Robert Hunt, DT – DJ Reader, TE – Noah Fant
  • Projected pick: TE – Desmond Irving
  • Thoughts:  Bucs were originally drafting #3.  Trading out of #3 leaves us to believe they have no interest in any QBs not named Mills this season.  So, let’s plan for the future.  Give the QB we draft next year another big target.
  1. New England Patriots
  • Team Needs: QB, RE, DT, LOLB, CB, WR, C
  • Key Losses: C- Rodney Hudson, RE – Frank Clark, WR – Sterling Sharpe, MLB – Alexander Johnson, HB – Rhamondre Stevenson
  • Key Acquisitions: RG – Joe Runyan
  • Projected pick: DT – Lorenzo Leak
  • Thoughts: Patriots could go a number of different ways here, seems the typical within the first half.  I think a great idea would be take the best DT in the draft first.
  1. New Orleans Saints
  • Team Needs: QB, LE, DT, MLB, CB, FS, TE
  • Key Losses: FS – Lamarcus Joyner, WR - Tre’Quan Smith, K – Will Lutz, WR – Deonte Hardy,    WR – Michael Thomas, SS – Marcus Maye, CB – Marshon Lattimore
  • Key Acquisitions: CB – Asante Samuel, ROLB – Dre Greenlaw, CB – Ahkello Witherspoon, RE – Poona Ford, HB – Cam Akers, LT – Jedrick Willis, SS – Ryan Neal, CB – Dane Jackson, WR – K.J. Osborn, WR – Chase Claypool, FS – Xavier Rhodes
  • Projected pick: TE – Jerry Sewell
  • Thoughts: The Saints went full rebuild in a 3 QB draft.  Same as my statements earlier.  Get a TE, start giving them passing options asap for your next QB
  1. Dallas Cowboys
  • Team Needs: ROLB, TE
  • Key Losses: FS – Malik Hooker, MLB – Leighton Vander Esch, RE – Dorance Armstrong
  • Key Acquisitions: RG – Gabe Jackson, CB – Andrew Booth, HB – Ezekiel Elliot, WR – Brandin Cooks
  • Projected pick: ROLB – Dave Wolfe
  • Thoughts:  Cowboys were doing so good at LBer, they traded Micah away for a mid 1st. 
  1. Cleveland Browns
  • Team Needs: QB, LE, DT, LOLB, WR, LT
  • Key Losses: FS – John Johnson, P – Corey Bojoquez, WR- Donovan Peoples-Jones, MLB – Bobby Wagner, QB - Deshaun Watson, WR - Amari Cooper
  • Key Acquisitions: RE – Zach Sieler, MLB – Jordyn Brooks, HB – Khalil Herbert
  • Projected pick: LT – Scott Reynolds
  • Thoughts: Trading away Cooper and Watson, leaves a hole at QB and WR.  I’m not sure what the plan is.  WR could definitely be the pick here, but they wanna create holes for Chubb.
  1. Dallas Cowboys

  • Key Acquisitions: See Above
  • Projected pick: LOLB - Fulton
  • Thoughts: I just think this a BPA pick.  I threw out Fulton due to a high number of good OLBs

  • Thoughts: Pairing Rookie QB Brackett with a new rookie WR to develop with Cupp still under contract

  • Thoughts: Another BPA.  A top tier CB is always nice.

  • Thoughts: They addressed the target, not lets get him protect. Even if Mills in the future, won’t matter if he’s getting pressured every play.

  • Thoughts:  This team will be deadly.  Getting Patterson will give them a solid Oline and help protect the Foote clan.
  1. Buffalo Bills
  • Team Needs: ROLB, CB, FS, SS, WR, RT
  • Key Losses: RE – Von Miller, P – Thomas Morstead, HB – James Robinson, FS – Micah Hyde, K – Tyler Bass, HB – Miles Sanders, CB – Nik Needham, WR – Stefon Diggs, C – Mitch Morse, ROLB – Matt Milano, CB – Taron Johnson
  • Key Acquisitions: RE – Joey Bosa
  • Projected pick: FS – Sidney Gallimore
  • Thoughts: Cap troubles cost this team an offseason, that and wanting a MAGA Bosa.  But, losing Hyde and getting Gallimore right away eases the tension of this offseason.
  1. Atlanta Falcons
  • Team Needs: CB, SS, LG
  • Key Losses: CB – Casey Heyward, LE – JJ Watt, HB – Cordarrelle Patterson, WR – Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WR – Curtis Samuel, MLB – Mykal Walker, SS – Jaylinn Hawkins
  • Key Acquisitions: WR – Dyami Brown, RT – Branden Smith, FS – Julian Blackmon, CB – Chidobe Awuzie, LOLB – Hassan Riddick, WR – Marquise Brown, HB – Austin Ekeler
  • Projected pick: SS – Brian Graves
  • Thoughts: For every player they lost, they gained someone better. The only real position they didn’t replace was Hawkins.  Graves is an upgrade over Hawkins too. 
  1. Baltimore Ravens
  • Team Needs: WR, RT
  • Key Losses: SS – Chuck Clark, WR – Devin Duvernay, LOLB – Tyus Bowser, CB – Anthony Averett
  • Key Acquisitions: CB – Bryce Hall
  • Projected pick: RT – Derek Kendrick
  • Thoughts: Lamar and the Ravens are easily a threat to be the top offense each and every week.  They lost a big play maker in Duvernay. They could replace them, or go safe and pick up one of the better OL in the draft.
  1. New York Giants
  • Team Needs: LE, RE, RG
  • Key Losses: WR – Devante Parker, RT – Bryan Bulaga, FS – Xavier McKinney, WR – Dyami Brown,    RE – Poona Ford, CB – Cordale Ford
  • Key Acquisitions: MLB – Erik Kendricks, WR – Calvin Ridley, LT – Taylor Lewan, CB – Charvarius Ward, WR – Curtis Samuel
  • Projected pick: RE – Bryan Porter
  • Thoughts: Another team that had a good offseason.  With no real threats on the ends of the DLine, this makes it a no brainer

  • Thoughts: BPA. No Explanation needed.
  1. Detroit Lions

  • Key Losses: WR – Josh Reynolds, HB – D’Andre Swift, WR – Quintez Cephus, QB – Jared Goff
  • Key Acquisitions: HB – Miles Sanders
  • Projected pick: MLB – Larry Simmons
  • Thoughts: Arguable the worse LBer core in the league, the Lions get the luxury of any MLBs in the draft falling to them. 
  1. Green Bay Packers
  • Team Needs: RE, LOLB, RG, RT
  • Key Losses: HB – AJ Dillon, RG – Jon Runyan, TE – Austin Hooper
  • Key Acquisitions: HB – Nyheim Hines, TE – Gerald Everett, MLB – Mykal Walker
  • Projected pick: RE – Kevin Cousins
  • Thoughts: The LE is nonexistent in this defense.  Could go offense line to protect Rodgers for 1 more season, but gotta look past Rodgers
  1. Cincinnati Bengals
  • Team Needs: DT, MLB, ROLB, CB, SS (ish?), C, RT
  • Key Losses: CB – Chidobe Awuzie, SS – Jordan Poyer, DT – DJ Reader, WR – Jarvis Landry, CB – Mike Hilton, RT – La’el Collins, DT – BJ Hill, CB – A.J. Bouye, C – Ted Karras, ROLB – Khalil Mack, HB – Joe Mixon
  • Key Acquisitions: MLB – Josey Jewell
  • Projected pick: CB – Shaq Balmer
  • Thoughts: They have 2 CBs on their roster.

  • Projected pick: WR – Greg Watts
  • Thoughts: You can either build toward giving Malik another target or build towards giving 30 year old Henry more blockers.   I’m think passing attack
