The Great Collapse

What makes a good GM? It can be making trades that you win, it can be building the best team through FA, building through the draft, retaining your players, etc. Whatever method you use, the main thing you can hope for with your desired method is to create the best possible team through whatever means possible. Whatever it is to give you the best chance at a victory each week. You can be a good GM and a lousy coach. We see it all the time. People will get so stuck on looking at your record and applying that information to your GM work.

Today I want to display the rise and fall of teams throughout the league, just after two years at the helm. Sure, there are guys out there who get hamstrung by bad contracts, old players retiring, bad draft capital.... but at the end of the day did you do anything to soften those blows? If your QB is going to retire/hit FA, have you created a plan to replace him?

The first thing I want to point out is this chart, the reason behind the title of this article. The Great Collapse. No, this isn't an article about teams like the Dolphins, Titans, and Eagles who have shown early success that may plummit later in the cycle. I am talking about bringing balance to the gap between the best teams and the worst teams.

I know everyone will want to get caught up into "WHERES MY TEAM ON THAT CHART" and I know its not the easiest to read for that, but that's not the point. What I want to point out is the gap between the best and worst teams in Season 77 and where we are at in Season 79. There was a spread between 74 and 92 (+18) to start, and we are now down to 77 and 86 (+9). The gap between the best rated and worst rated teams is closing, which means we are seeing the high rated teams dropping lower, and the low teams moving up. It makes sense; we don't have the ability to create fake contracts like the NFL and it is hard to retain all your good players with the 3+1 in place.

Now to the fun chart that you all want to see. Where are you at, and how have you improved/destroyed your team in two seasons?

It is broken down by your team name, your current OVR rating, and how much you have changed since launch.

I know we are still young in the cycle. Drafting has been a pain to rebuild from. Some of the rebuild process on some of these teams will take time. It will be interesting if we see the same teams below their starting point, and if we see guys continue to stay above their opening day ratings.

Shout outs to the AFC South, who combined for +19 OVR improvement, by far the best improvement for a division. Inversely, the AFC West have all dropped between -3 and -4 each, combining for a league worst -14 decrease overall.
