Season 78 Mock Draft #2

Hello everyone,

              We are now almost at the halfway point of season 78. With that, I will now release the 2nd update to my mock draft.  I will give my top 15 picks, as currently ranked by Madden.  Madden made some interesting picks this draft, with a few day 3 guys jumping up to the 1st round.  I’m not so sure on my end. Let's get this started.

  1. San Francisco 49ers
  • Team Needs: QB, LT, RG, RT, LOLB, ROLB
  • Madden Projected Pick: LT – Ricardo Johnson
  • My Projected Pick: QB – Joe Taft
  • Thoughts:  As I said in the 1st mock draft, I think it’s time to move on from Trey Lance.  It’s clear by picking #1 OA that the experiment is over.  And you won’t get a talent a 2nd chance at a talent such as Taft.  But, if I’m wrong, I think Madden got it right.  Johnson gives the 49ers a LT to jump right in, because I don’t think Trent Williams plays at 36. 
  1. Cleveland Browns
  • Team Needs: LT, LE, ROLB, SS?
  • Madden Projected Pick: TE – Brendan Porter
  • My Projected Pick:  LT – Ricardo Johnson
  • Thoughts:  The Browns didn’t earn this #2 spot by their record.  They get this in the trade with the Seahawks.  This is, for all intents and purposes, a bonus pick.  So, you give one of the best offensive potential teams in the league the #1 Left Tackle.  It may not be flashy, but you can’t miss here.
  1. Las Vegas Raiders
  • Team Needs: QB, MLB, CB, RG, RT
  • Madden Projected Pick: QB – Joe Taft
  • My Projected Pick: QB – Donnell Henderson
  • Thoughts: My 1st mock draft, I had them taking Daymond Brooks.  I’m still high on Brooks, but my main concern is what I said earlier.  The 4th best QB in this division is Carr.  It’s time to move on.  The Raiders need to look at their situation. Can they afford another year with Carr?
  1. Denver Broncos
  • Team Needs:  QB?, MLB, CB, TE
  • Madden Projected Pick: RT – George Belfort
  • My Projected Pick: MLB – Rahim Dansby
  • Thoughts: I’m sticking with my original call.  I’m going to assume Wilson won’t retire at 36.  I think Rahim Dansby is the clear-cut favorite to be the first defensive player off the board, if things stay the way they are now.  I do think this is probably the best chance for anyone to trade up and take a QB here.  If you need one, this is the best time to trade up.
  1. Green Bay Packers
  • Team Needs: QB, WR, RT, ROLB
  • Madden Projected Pick: QB – Donnell Henderson
  • My Projected Pick: QB – Brett Fordham
  • Thoughts:  What are the odds Rodgers goes at 40?  I think it’s less and less likely that Rodgers is a Packer at 40, he’ll be making the same in age at this point.  For the GB Packers, we can all hope this is it for them.
  1. Cincinnati Bengals
  • Team Needs: QB?, RT, LE, RE, ROLB
  • Madden Projected Pick: LT – Chuck Clinton
  • My Projected Pick: QB – Steven Floyd
  • Thoughts: Is Ben Baker the answer here for the Bengals?  He looks like a really good back up.  I think they need to get a QB for one of the most explosive offensives in the league. Chuck Clinton is definitely a good under the radar pick, but the Bengals got screwed last draft, lets not take a day 3 player in the 1st day, yet.
  1. Los Angeles Rams
  • Team Needs:  QB, TE, LT, LE, DT, LOLB, MLB, ROLB, CB, FS,
  • Madden Projected Pick: RG – Daymond Brooks
  • My Projected Pick: CB – Juan Bozeman
  • Thoughts:  This is clearly one of the hardest teams to mock for.  The Rams are either good and old OR young and bad at every position I listed.  They have an elite CB but pairing him with a good young rookie could give silk a little bit of relief for a bit. But who knows.  This team could use almost every position.
  1. New Orleans Saints
  • Team Needs: QB?, TE, LE, LOLB, CB,
  • Madden Projected Pick:  DT – John Stockton
  • My Projected Pick: TE – Manu Medina
  • Thoughts:  QB Jalen Hurts was supposed to be the guy in NO.  They gave up the Honey Badger and a pretty good OL for him with some pics involved.  So, I don’t think they give up on Hurts after 1 season. But, it’s time to give up some long term solutions.  I don’t think they are going to grab another WR just yet. But, I love the funky Manu Medina.  I think he’ll be the top TE in the class.  Taysom Hill is nice, but Medina could be a lot better.
  1. Buffalo Bills
  • Team Needs: RE, DT, LB core, RG
  • Madden Projected Pick: LOLB – Doug Pierce
  • My Projected Pick: LOLB – Doug Pierce
  • Thoughts:  My last mock, I thought it could be Stockton.  But Madden and I agree. The Linebacking Core needs work.  Maybe you can find a bridge DT in free agency, but the Bills need to work on revamping this group. Doug Pierce right now looks like the sure fire guy that teams are begging for.
  1. Cincinnati Bengals
  • Team Needs: QB?, RT, LE, RE, ROLB
  • Madden Projected Pick: LG – Klay Parks
  • My Projected Pick: RT – George Belfort
  • Thoughts:  Why does Madden hate the Bengals?  Another 3rd day draft pick taken in the 1st round.  No.  Please don’t.  Take the can’t miss RT, Belfort.  Don’t even look at anyone else.  This would be a great pick for the Bengals after a travesty of the last draft.
  1. New York Jets
  • Team Needs: QB, TE, RT
  • Madden Projected Pick: QB – Brett Fordham
  • My Projected Pick: QB – Montra Sellers
  • Thoughts: Montra Sellers is jumping up draft boards.  We could potentially see him go in the 1st projection rating by my final mock.  With Medina and Belfort gone, I think it’s pretty easy to see the Jets jumping and taking a risk on Sellers. 
  1. Kansas City Chiefs
  • Team Needs:  WR, TE
  • Madden Projected Pick: LOLB – Steven Carroll
  • My Projected Pick: WR – Darius Barlow
  • Thoughts:  When the Chiefs were on my last mock, I didn’t think they were going to resign Chris Jones. I was wrong.  And with that DT is officially off my list of team needs.  I predicted Barlow in my 1st mock and I’m sticking to my guns.  He’s easily the #1 WR right now and give the Chiefs the speed deep threat they lost with Hill.
  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Team Needs: QB?, TE, LG, LE, SS
  • Madden Projected Pick: TE – Manu Medina
  • My Projected Pick: LE – Bobby Callahan
  • Thoughts: I don’t want to see them take Callahan. But I originally predicted Callahan to go #1 to the Jaguars.  I think at pick 13, the Bucs get a steal of a draft pick.  I think Brendan Porter has good potential here or maybe Travis Winston.  But, I think they’ll fall in love with Callahan.
  1. Dallas Cowboys
  • Team Needs: TE, LG, RG, RE, DT, CB, FS, SS
  • Madden Projected Pick: LOLB – Joseph Dixon
  • My Projected Pick: RG – Daymond Brooks
  • Thoughts: The Cowboys have a lot of options here.  But they do need a lot of work at the guard position.  Brooks is the best guard in the draft.  Could they go defense?  The best secondary guys are still there.  But, the smart money for a day 1 starter is Brooks.
  1. Baltimore Ravens
  • Team Needs: WR, RG, RT, LE, RE, MLB,
  • Madden Projected Pick: LE – Bobby Callahan
  • My Projected Pick:  RE – Jarred Claiborne
  • Thoughts:  If the Ravens need Callahan but get Claiborne instead, they’d be happy.  They need help on the trenches. Every position need on the board lost their top guy at each position except RE, and he’s no slouch.   The Ravens get a little bit of luck after a whole lot of bad luck in the 1st draft.

Well, that wraps up Mock Draft #2.  Next draft will have top 20 teams on it, and maybe way more in depth.  I’m still doing a lot of research so far.  Feel free to reach out to me and yell at me for giving your pick away.  Until next time.
