Season 78 Mock Draft #1

Hello everyone,

The way I’ll be doing Mock drafts this year is as follows:  When Madden does a mock draft, I’ll do a mock draft.  My 1st Mock Draft will feature the top 10 as it is currently projected on Madden.   The 2nd mock draft will be the top 15 as projected on Madden’s mock draft 2.  The 3rd mock draft will be the top 20 as projected on Madden’s mock draft 3.  The 4th mock draft will be the top 25 as projected on Madden’s mock draft 4.  The 5th and final mock draft will be a full mock draft with every pick in the 1st round, and a bonus 2nd round 1st overall draft pick. I don't look at what Madden projects until after I've made my predictions.

Since we are only in Week 3 of the league, my mock draft will likely be bland, but I will try my best.

That being said, let’s just into my first mock draft of Season 78!

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars:
  • Team Needs: TE, LE, CB, SS
  • Madden Projected Pick: Left End - Bobby Callahan
  • My Projected Pick: Left End – Bobby Callahan
  • Thoughts:  I think that the Jaguars REALLY don’t want to take him here.  I think they are hoping to get Cameron Jordan for 2 years so they can put that pick at a corner or something.  Bobby Callahan gives the day 1 replacement for Jordan, shall he retire.
  1. Kansas City Chiefs
  • Team Needs: DT, WR, TE
  • Madden Projected Pick: LOLB Doug Pierce
  • My Projected Pick: Wide Receiver – Darius Barlow
  • Thoughts:  I think the Chiefs left Chris Jones go to free agency, 1 year removed from letting Nnadi do they samething.  While John Stockton could be the pick to replace him, and I believe he should be, I think the Chiefs give Mahomes a new target.  Tight Ends Medina and Porter will be given a good strong look by them, as Kelce might need a replacement, if they choose not to go the free agency route.
  1. New York Jets
  • Team Needs: QB, TE, RT
  • Madden Projected Pick: RT - George Belfort
  • My Projected Pick: Quarterback – Joe Taft
  • Thoughts: Look, Joe Taft is probably the best player in the draft. He’s certainly the best quarterback.  I think the Jets have a TON of pieces already in place for a long run this Madden, but after letting Wilson go and then not having a chance to draft a QB they want, the Jets salivate at this pick, and this will be the quickest selection on draft day.
  1. San Francisco 49ers
  • Team Needs:  QB, ROLB, FS, SS, RG
  • Madden Projected Pick: LT - Ricardo Johnson
  • My Projected Pick: Left Outside Linebacker – Doug Piece
  • Thoughts: Is it time to give up on Trey? I know the 49ers don’t want to think that, but it maybe the time.  If it is, this is the year to do it. 4 of the top 6 players are quarterbacks.  With that being said, I don’t think they want to give up on Trey.  Instead, they take Doug Pierce.  He’s coming in on the left side, but the 49ers will quickly move him to the right side.  Sterling Lewis will given a long consideration, but ultimately, they’ll go with Piece
  1. Indianapolis Colts
  • Team Needs: QB(?), RE, LOLB, ROLB, TE
  • Madden Projected Pick: LOLB Steven Carroll
  • My Projected Pick: TE Manu Medina
  • Thoughts: The funky Tight End Medina.  The Colts last year were salivating at the mouth at the idea of Justin Peerman.  They dream went away when the Bengals took him.  Medina will give some remorse as he isn’t a physical specimen at Peerman was, but he’ll definitely jump ahead of all tight ends on the roster.  The only question with the Colts is Chase Shields the guy?  I’m thinking the Colts will give Shields 1 year to be their starter, if not, he will forever be know as a backup on the Colts.
  1. Washington Commanders
  • Team Needs: QB, LOLB, FS, TE, RG
  • Madden Projected Pick: QB - Joe Taft
  • My Projected Pick: QB – Donnell Henderson
  • Thoughts: They can’t have faith in Howell and also get Garoppolo on the roster.  I think the Commanders need their cycle QB.  Steve Carroll of the Office is ready to lead that defense like he leads Dunder Mifflen if they decided to pass on a QB.
  1. Buffalo Bills
  • Team Needs: RE, DT, LB core, RG
  • Madden Projected Pick: LOLB Joseph Dixon
  • My Projected Pick: DT – John Stockton
  • Thoughts: I know the whole Linebacker core needs to be addressed but there is a major gap from the best DT in the draft to the next one.  So, while I think it should be a linebacker, I think the Bills need to address that need at defensive tackle in the 1st round.
  1. Carolina Panthers
  • Team Needs: QB, MLB, LOLB, CB, WR, TE, C
  • Madden Projected Pick: RE - Jarred Claiborne
  • My Projected Pick: QB – Brett Fordham
  • Thoughts: Maybe Baker is the guy. Maybe Kelly wants to pay Baker an enormous contract to keep him locked up threw the cycle.  I really don’t think he does.  So, if he’s not ready to commit to Baker for his entire career, THIS IS THE TIME TO DO IT!  If not, LOLB Joseph Dixon or MLB Rahim Dansby should be the easy target.
  1. Denver Broncos
  • Team Needs: QB, MLB, CB, TE
  • Madden Projected Pick: DT - John Stockton
  • My Projected Pick: MLB – Rahim Dansby
  • Thoughts: The only reason I listed QB as a need is I don’t know when Russell is going to retire.  35 at the start of next season, I don’t see him retiring, but he could.  If that’s the case, they Broncos go QB. We are assuming that he’s there.  They instead get the best Middle Linebacker in the draft in an aging average MLB group.
  1. Las Vegas Raiders
  • Team Needs: QB, MLB, CB, RG, RT
  • Madden Projected Pick: RG - Daymond Brooks
  • My Projected Pick: CB – Taylor Warner
  • Thoughts: Can the Raiders afford to have the 4th best QB in the division?  They have some great targets on offense, but like I’ve said over and over in this mock, this is the best draft class for Quarter back.  If you need one, you have the resources.  But, I think if they don’t take a corner, I think we could see the 1st corner go off the board here.

Well, here we go.  Feel free to leave me some feedback.  Good or bad. I’m here for it!

Disclaimer:  I’m going to do my best to not give any of my sleeper picks out.  But this will be my educated guesses as to where people will be going and drafting.  My views of needs will likely not match your views of needs.  And without archetypes, some picks will be hard to make this early.
