NFC South

Most teams have now played at least 10 games and it is becoming crunch time to make that playoff push, ruin somebody’s dream or go get that high draft spot. There is a lot of that taking place right here in the NFC South.

Atlanta Falcons:

Drafted Players:

#11 Rich Walker WR

#20 Brian Melvin TE

#41 Larry Downs DE

#52 Alton Wheeler DT

#63 Warren Calloway DE

#84 Lonnie Freeman OLB

#89 Walter Kramer WR

Offensive Ranks:

Points: 23 ppg (23rd)

Total Yards: 310 ypg (27th)

Passing Yards: 241 ypg (21st)

Rushing Yards: 68 rpg (32nd)

Coming off a playoff berth where they had an early exit thanks to division rival Panthers. The Falcons sought to retool their offense in the draft. They used both first round selections on a WR and a TE and selected another WR late in the third. Some of this we can contribute to the retirement of Julio Jones. Some would say you can’t replace a guy like Julio especially with a rookie. However, Rich Walker came in and said “Hold my MAGA hat” to the tune of 49 catches for 831 yards and 10 tds through 10 games. Wow this guy is huge and can ball out. We’ve already heard comparisons to Megatron and Metcalf. He may just live up to them if this continues.  TE Melvin is having a solid season but has been greatly overshadowed by Walker. Melvin has a 22-298-4 line so far this season. If this offense can stop turning the ball over these 2 may just be in the top 5 for RoY with Walker taking home that trophy. The last guys hoping to make an impact on this offense made his first touchdown catch of the season last night against the cowboys. But, he wasn’t wearing red n black. He is now with the Steelers as he had trouble finding his way with the loaded offense that is the Falcons.

Defensive Ranks:

Points: 22 ppg (7th)

Total Yards: 326 ypg (7th)

Passing Yards: 235 ypg (11th)

Rushing Yards: 91 rpg (91):

The heart and soul of this team for this season has been this stout defense. They are a tough challenge for any team this year. Being a top 10 defense in almost every category, is quite an accomplishment with some of the defenses this season. The defense is putting up all these numbers without any rookie contribution. As the only rookie to see the field is Larry Downs and he has notched a grand total of 1 tackle. It is a good thing they didn’t need this rookie class to help out, however they could just be investments in the future of the team.

Season Prediction: 9-7

Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

Drafted Players:

#29 Jeff Cooper RT

#61 Bruce White RG

#93 Evan McCleod HB

Offensive Ranks:

Points: 24 ppg( 20th)

Total Yards: 362 ypg (16th)

Passing Yards: 271 ypg (12th)

Rushing Yards: 90 rpg (21st)

The Bucs reached the NFC championship last season and fell just short against the Champs. Now they find themselves 2 games under .500 with a bottom half offense even though they used each of their first 3 picks to help address the issue. Selecting an offensive lineman in the first and second rounds, hasn’t seemed to help much as hagans has been sacked 22 times and they post only the 21 first rushing offense. But, surely 3rd round running back McCleod is making some sort of impact. You’d be right if you needed water while playing for the Texans because that is about all he is good for right now. Rumor is that Coach Tauph maybe on the chopping block at the end of the season  if this continues.

Defensive Ranks:

Points: 28 ppg (26th)

Total Yards: 349 ypg (14th)

Passing Yards: 256 ypg (18th)

Rushing Yards: 92 rpg (10th)

What can i say? The Bucs didn’t draft any defensive help and it shows at this point in the season. They sure could use a bit of help preventing the other teams from scoring. They are allowing a whopping 4 touchdowns a week. Now if you look at the yards you wouldn't think they would be that bad. A top half total defense allwoing 349 yards a game and a top 10 rush defense only giving up 92 yards a week. The defense just isn't getting much pressure on the QB or forcing turnovers. Under 20 sacks, 10 interceptions and under 10 forced fumbles. Something has to turn around if this team wants to make a late playoff push.

Season Prediction: 8-8

New Orleans Saints:

Drafted Players:

#34 Dalton Edwards FS

Offensive Ranks:

Points: 20 ppg(27th)

Total Yards: 305 ypg (28th)

Passing Yards: 214 ypg(28th)

Rushing Yards: 91 rpg (91)

With no offensive players drafted in the first 3 rounds, we have to turn our eye towards the major acquisition that the Saints made and this none other than Sam Darnold.  The offense has not looked great under darnold this season. It looks as if he is throwing to the Ghost of Michael Thomas out there. The saints are in desperate need of a #1 WR i expect that to be a big target of theirs going forward.

Defensive Ranks:

Points: 24 ppg (11th)

Total Yards: 345 ypg (12th)

Passing Yards: 262 y[g (20th)

Rushing Yards: 82 rpg (4th)

WIth their lone pick in the first 3 rounds the Saints selected Dalton Edwards FS out of Virgina.  He came out looking to make an immediate impact on this defense. With a top 15 overall defense so far this season. Allowing only 24 points a game and only 82 yards on the ground week in and week out, it is safe to say Dalton is keeping  Marcus WIlliams hydrated as he flies around the field making all the plays. The rook better be paying attention because that may be him one day soon but for now keep bringing the water young man.

Season Prediction: 7-9

Carolina Panthers:

Drafted Players:

#21 Cory Foster C

Offensive Ranks:

Points: 18 ppg (30th)

Total Yards: 303 ypg (30th)

Passing Yards: 216 ypg (27th)

Rushing Yards: 87 rpg (26th)

This offense is nothing to write home about as they are bottom 6 in every category. However, this doesn’t have anything to do with rookie C Foster. That line has only given up 14 sacks on the season. That's dang good.  However, The qb play has been atrocious at best. I look for this team to make some major moves this offseason.

Defensive Ranks:

Points: 27 ppg (23rd)

Total Yards: 365 ypg (21st)

Passing Yards: 265 ypf (23rd)

Rushing Yards: 100 rpg (15th)

The Panthers did not address their defense whatsoever in this draft. As they sit in the bottom half of every category it would seem they are in need of a complete overhaul this offseason. Look for them to possibly blow this team up and rebuild through the draft and free agency.

Season Prediction: 1-15
