King’s Declaration NFC East We are now nearly half way through season 66 and it is time to look at how this year's rookies are impacting the teams that selected them. Every year teams are looking to pull themselves out of the holes they have dug themselves into. Others are looking to put themselves over the hump and make the playoffs and then there are the teams looking for that final piece to make that Super Bowl run. Who accomplished their goals and who is stuck in neutral? NFC East New York Giants Drafted Players: #10 Jake McCain LG #42 Jonathan McLean HB After a 5-11 season that saw the Giants fall just short of a division title they decided to focus on offense after season 65. They decided to give Saquan a big mauler to run behind as they drafted Jake McCain. This man comes in at 6’3 329 and arguably the best lineman to come out of this draft. The issue is he seems to be the line hasn’t quite gelled together as they are only averaging 82 rushing yards a game. He also gave up 3 sacks through 7 games. Not too bad as this offense is averaging over 300 passing yards a game. But this could be because they seem to be playing from behind quite a bit. How about that second round rb? With Barkley locked up for 4 more years and some older backups the Giants drafted a long term backup for Barkley. But he has yet to see any meaningful snaps this season as Le’Veon seems to be the primary backup. McLean has 6 carries for 9 yards this season. The G-Men Decided not to address the defense in the draft and that seems to be going well for them so far. Only giving up 335 total yards a game, 240 passing yards and 95 rushing the defense is holding its own. They are top 10 in all yardage categories. The only rough part to this defense is they are giving ip 27 points a game. Which is bottom 10 in the league, but we can probably attribute this to the turnovers on offense. Season Prediction: 5-11 Washington Football Team Players Drafted: #6 Gabe Peek QB #13 Tommy Hartsell TE #39 Julius Shields HB #70 Landon Harvin WR It is fairly obvious what the WFT decided was a need heading into the draft. As they loaded up on offense through the first 3 rounds of the draft. It seems to be working fairly well through the halfway point of the season as they are top half in every offensive category. 14th in points scored with 26 a game. Top 10 in yardage with over 368 total yards including 267 passing yards and adding a steady 100 rushing yards every week. Qb Gabe Peek is the man behind this offensive explosion. Completing 70% of his passes for nearly 2k yards and 18 tds with only 13 ints. Pretty solid rookie debut to this point. Quite possibly Peek’s favorite is fellow rookie Hartsell; this man has 39 catches for 458 yards with a team leading 8 touchdowns. The rookie TE is balling to this point however, he will need to work on those hands as he also has 8 drops on the season. WR Harvin is playing his role well this season, he is a young guy in a loaded receiving core, but he has managed to post an 11-121-1 stat line so far.RB Julius Shields is competing in a RB by committee in Washington. With Hunt leading the team in carries Shields has managed to nab 26 carries for 107 yards on the season. He has yet to find the endzone but it is only a matter of time. With no defensive players taken early in the draft there isn’t much to talk about here. This defense is great at not allowing points, giving up only 22 a game good enough for the top 10. They are boasting the league's 2nd best rush defense only allowiing 64.3 a game. However, this secondary may be this team’s achilles heel. Giving up a whopping 257 yards a game. Season Prediction: 10-6 Dallas Cowboys: Players Drafted: #3 Sheldon Ellington DE #72 Johnathan Love DE The Cowboys may be off to their hottest start yet at 6-2. However, they did not draft any offensive weapons in this draft class. That is not too surprising as they have a pretty good offense. They still have an above average O-Line with Dak at the helm. Then you have Zeke dominating the run game and if he needs a break you got a good backup in Fitzsimmons who is pretty dynamic himself. Holding it down for the receivers is CeeDee and Pittman Jr. Not surprising this team is scoring a lot of points at 29 a game and averaging over 115 rushing yards per game both top 10 in the league. Now for the side of the ball that was the focus in the offseason. This Dallas Def. They are one of the better units in the league this season. 2nd in total points at 15, top 10 in total yards and 5th in rushing yards giving up only 73.1 Just need to stop other teams from airing it out and they may be scary. But are the rookies making an impact that Dallas was hoping for? So far not so good as they have only combined for 8 tackles and 3 sacks through 8 games. The problem is there are so many young talented lineman in this team the coaching staff is probably having a tough time figuring out who to start. Season Prediction 9-7 Philadelphia Eagles Players Drafted: #8 Bronson Elliot DE #9 Jashua Lawton CB #18 Sheldon Ringer DT #59 Javon German DT Off to yet another hot start is the Eagles but this season they have a few teams closing in on them. They decided not to draft any offensive weapons this year but who could blame them after dropping $200 MILLION on Stefon Diggs over the next 5 years. WOW. But is he helping in the way Coach Adel was hoping? Well the offense is in the middle of the pack. Scoring 29 points a game is pretty solid but only averaging 340 yards a game with 246 of those being passing. Seems to be leaving a lot to be desired from this Eagles offense. Diggs is only leading the team in yards but no other category. He may be an expensive decoy at this time. Now for the focus of the draft the defense. How are the rookies making an impact and were they worth the investment. Well the Eagles Defense is currently ranked top 10 in points and rushing defense. But bottom 10 in passing defense. Seems to be a common thing in the East . Stop the run and get dotted up the rest of the game Bronson was selected 8 overall. But he seems to be an investment for the future, as he only has 1 tackle and 1 sack. How about the other D lineman taken in Ringer and German. Ringer is doing well totalling 6 tackles and 3 sacks so far this season, where German has yet to see any playing time. Now Lawton on the other hand is doing really well so far, racking up 26 tackles and 2 interceptions. Looks like he may be a cornerstone of the future of this team. Season Prediction: 13-3
