The Cleveland Browns Season 41 RZ Draft Recap
1st round, 11th pick – MLB Kent Hughes – Georgia
The Browns were lacking talent at the linebacker position and chose Georgia standout MLB Kent Hughes to fill some of the void. With the selection of Hughes, Cleveland Browns veteran linebacker Thaddeus Fitzgerald elected to move to ROLB, allowing Hughes to play his natural position. Hughes is well known for being a quick learner and understanding the nuances of the position. The Browns are hoping he can contribute immediately and help improve the Browns defense. He will wear #56, the same number his favorite player Derrick Johnson wore.
2nd round, 11th pick – FS Artaves Newhouse – Umass
The Browns were seeking depth at both safety positions and selected FS Artaves Newhouse from UMass. The Browns intentions are to get him playing time at both positions as a sub. He had quite the collegiate career, but only time will tell if his style of play will translate to the NFL. He’s a bit raw in coverage, but that will improve with reps.
3rd round, 11th pick – WR Curry Waynes – Northwestern State
The Browns reached on this pick, but they see the potential this young man has. No doubt about his catching ability, especially in traffic, but he is very raw in executing routes and exploding off the line. He may see some game action this year if an injury occurs to a starting receiver, but in the meantime he will be putting in extra practice daily and running with the scout team.
3rd round, 24th pick – HB Fisher Wheatley – Rutgers
Another pick the Browns reached on based on pure athleticism. The kid can run with the best of them, but has difficulty finding space and hitting the hole. He too will only see game action if an injury occurs this year, but for now is being mentored by Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson. As a member of the scout team, he’ll prepare the Browns defense when they are facing a team with a similar speedy back.
4th round, 11th pick – MLB Chandler Ferwerda – South Carolina State
As mentioned earlier, the Browns linebacker corps was lacking and GM Eikim went for depth here in the fourth round. Ferwerda has decent speed, good acceleration, all while maintaining great strength and hit power. A bit raw in other areas, but he’ll be the understudy to Kent Hughes and will be a situational player to begin his career.
5th round, 11th pick – MLB KeJuan Anderson – Wisconsin
Again the Browns where searching for more youth and depth at the linebacker position and they struck on a versatile one. Anderson can play both middle and outside linebacker positions. He’ll be the day one starter at LOLB. He has decent speed and acceleration, also a film study freak, which at this time is a significant strength.
6th round, 24th pick – WR Joe Love – Clemson
The Browns liked what they saw at the combine and selected Love in the 6th round. He’s raw in executing routes and that will be a focus in training this year. He has good speed and can jump out of the stadium, but he’ll need to focus on improving his hand-eye coordination. He’ll start on the scout team and hopefully work his way up to the 53 within the next two seasons.
7th round, 11th pick – SS Jaron Cowart – Cincinnati
This 21 year old can hit and when he does, the individual on the receiving end is seeing stars. Great acceleration, but mediocre speed. He’ll need to be heavily polished to have a chance at making the 53 in the future, but we love the heart he has shown.
