S38 1st quarter report on the New York Jets

The New York Jets are the last remaining undefeated team after only 4 games. Their games have been hard fought and they could easily be 1-3 after barely squeaking out wins against the Steelers, Browns, and Giants. Trade acquisition Jordan Howard has been the focal point on offense having been given a league-leading 89 rushing attempts. He averaged 208 carries per season in Chicago and is on pace for an astounding 350+ attempts with New York. The Jets would be wise to limit his carries, especially given their backup Mark Ingram had 1250 yards last season. A quote from Howard after last night’s game against the Giants suggests that he is pleased with his role, “I feel blessed to be apart of a team with a great offensive line and a coaching staff who wants to run the ball. Loved Chicago, but I’m grateful to be on the Jets right now man.” Second-year quarterback Chase Hillman has struggled a bit through the start of the season. He threw pick-6’s in each of the first three games and has been vehement that he will correct the problem, “Our team is playing great and I keep holding us back with inopportune turnovers. Through the first 3 games, I have given up more points than the defense and that’s completely unacceptable. I will continue to work as hard as I can to improve. I won’t continue to let my teammates down.” Hillman has a passer rating of 89 and a td/int ratio of 7/6 so the sky isn’t falling, he just needs to cut down on bad turnovers and learn to manage the game better. The defense has picked up right where they left off. A trade for DT Michael Brockers and seemingly great draft selection of rookie CB Henry Bech have only strengthened what was already the strength of this team. They are playing with a ton of confidence and allowing a league-low 16 ppg (with 3 offensive pick-6’s factoring into that), 45 rushing ypg, and have taken the ball away 14 times already. They still cannot seem to get to the passer with only 3 sacks, but their overall play has overcome that deficiency. SS Jamal Adams is tied for the league lead in interceptions and is widely regarded as the best safety in the league. If this defense can stay healthy, the limit is the sky.
