Prime's Season 72 Draft
DB Recap
How They Hanging?
Special
Guess Who’s Back? No it ain’t Em, man. We bout that Rakim Life over here, baby! Now say it with me now… Priiiime Tiiiime.. Priiiime Tiiiime…
Season 72 is underway. And we’ve seen plenty of our usual High Drama that is only Red Zone Football, man. Every year a new crop of DBs enter the league in hopes of Stardom. These are MY GUYS, baby. I’m EXCITED by some of the Defensive playmaking I’ve seen so far. But some of these guys ain’t lighting my fire, man. Haha! Lemme break down the Top DB Selections of the Red Zone Rookie Draft of Season 72! Let's Get To It, baby!
_____
Delvin Ettiene - CB
8th Pick - Steelers
Drafted 75 ovr Star / Currently 76
Delvin was the 1st DB taken in the RZ72 Draft. So expectations were high, man. Afterall, DBs don’t typically go Top 10 in RZ like yours truly (5th) unless they are destined for greatness.. Like me, I'm different. I’m Priiiime (flashes smile)... Ettiene hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, man. With 37 total tackles, 1 TFL and 3 breakups. It's not easy to justify his high selection just yet. He’s played solid so far. But at #8 Overall, you looking for FIREWORKS, baby! One things for sure though, the kid can tackle. We’ll see how the rest of RZ72 shapes out for him.
_____
Lance Rhodes - CB
22nd Pick - Colts
Drafted 72 ovr Star / Currently 73
This one was a little bit of a head scratcher when the card came down. I mean, Indy has several vets in place at the position. So I was a little worried about this kid's burn. And I was right. Thru Week 7 he only has 118 snaps under his belt. That’s really not enough snaps to justify taking him when your DB room is already crowded. He has a measly 10 total tackles and 1 breakup. Coach Carpenter gotta figure this out, man. That 1st year development is crucial for DBs. And this kid is in REAL DANGER of losing that Star Status he came into the league with.
_____
Mike Garvin - SS
29th Pick - Vikings
Drafted 72 ovr Star / Currently 74
One could argue that Garvin went to the best situation he could hope for in the Draft. A defensive minded coach on a defensive minded team. Ready out the box. And will certainly be used to the fullest year 1. Coach Astin threw him into the fire, Day 1. And it's been a perfect fit for this young man. With 45 total tackles, 2 TFLs, 3 picks, 6 breakups, 2 FF. Yeeeaaa you heard it, man. This kid’s a Stat Stuffer early in his career. And this will translate to MASSIVE development early. And at 6’3” with 91 speed, this kid will be a menacing Superstar very soon. The Rich get Richer in Minnesota.
_____
Devante Frye - CB
32nd Pick - WFT
Drafted 75 ovr Normal / Currently 76
This kid was a MONSTER at Tulane. And he came into the league with the best intangibles in the DB Draft Party. A 6’3” Shutdown CB with 91 speed. He was a starter as soon as they wrote his name on the card, baby! The only thing that could POSSIBLY hold him back is slow development. But I don’t think that’s a problem for Coach Chapstick. 4o total tackles, 1 TFL, 1 pick, 5 breakups from the last player taken in Round 1? That’s good ball from your rookie. Dev or Not… He’ll be one of the best DBs in the league.
_____
Damarious Atkins - CB
43rd Pick - Vikings
Drafted 74 ovr Normal / Currently 74
Let’s face it. Coach Astin knows how to use his rookies. This shoulda been a value pick. A Depth Chart DB. But not here. Not for Astin. D-Act has 54 tackles, 6 TFLs, 1 sack, 3 breakups, 1 FF, 2 FR, and 1 TD! Talk about Championship Pedigree. He’s been a mad man in the Nickel. I see no reason why this kid won’t be in the DROY convo at the end of the season. Right now he’s got my vote, man. And that Normal Dev won’t be Normal Dev for long, baby!
_____
Kevin Fleming - FS
47th Pick - Chiefs
Drafted 71 ovr Star / Currently 73
I gotta be honest here. I didn’t like this pick from the jump. I mean, Chiefs still got Thornhill. So I didn’t think the rookie would get much burn. But Coach KJ surprised me and gave him the nod over the vet. And it’s been a success. Fleming has flashed in that spot. 54 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 INT and 11 breakups! That's solid play from a rookie FS. I don’t see Honeybadger going anywhere even approaching 32. So you wonder what the Chiefs will do with Thornhill going forward. Cuz this kid is here!
_____
The Rest of the Field
The remaining picks saw a handful of notable DBs get selected. Most will be destined for backup positions and Special Teams. With names like SS Jamar Cadet (pick 58), CB Oscar Springs (67), SS Connor Murphy (69), FS Charles Claiborn (79), CB Donte Hughes (84), CB Tony Wroten (87) and FS Enrique Colvin (90) rounding out the 2nd and 3rd rounds. But it was Pick 78 that sparked my interest outta this bunch, man.
SS Dexter McDougal was a gem in the 3rd for the Titans! 75 overall! His Raw Measurables jumped out at me. This kid really coulda been the steal of the Draft in the right hands. The right situation. Even with only a Normal Dev. But, oh man, the kid is not seeing the kinda time he needs. And with a third of the season gone already, I don’t know if Coach Andy will utilize him. Shame shame, my man.
_____
More Than Honorable Mention (The Actual Steal):
CB Isaiah Ross out of Houston is a Hidden Gem for the Ravens. Selected at Pick 164, he wasn’t expected to be a Big Name. But with a Star Dev, 93 speed and other athletic measurables on a tall 6’2” frame. He’s been a pleasant surprise. And Coach Adelman has used him nicely, in all his Big Brained Wisdom. 21 total tackles, 4 picks, 5 breakups and 3 TDs! That's MASSIVE from a 5th Rounder. Potential DROY Thief here, baby!
Alright, RZ. Thanks once again for tuning into YO boy, Primetime.
