Turnover in Atlanta

The Falcons had to face some tough financial decisions this offseason. With so many players up for new contracts, Atlanta stuck with young up and coming players. They resigned:

  • C Matt Hennessy
  • CB A.J. Terrell
  • RG Chris Lindstrom

They also placed the franchise tag on MLB Deion Jones. The team will be looking to lock Dion down with a long-term contract next season.

The team is losing 6 starters and 4 situational players this off season:

  • WR Julio Jones (retired)
  • RE Grady Jarrett
  • LE Marlon Davidson
  • CB A.J. Bouye
  • FS Damontae Kazee
  • ROLB C.J. Mosley
  • SS Jordan Poyer
  • LE Michael Brockers
  • HB Devonta Freeman
  • FS Marvell Tell III

Obviously, the biggest losses are going to be X-Factor players such as Julio and Grady Jarret. It was also extremely painful for the team to part ways with young Superstar Marlon Davidson at DE. The defensive line will be in need of serious upgrades either through free agency or the draft. (probably both) It will be interesting to see what the Falcons do at wide receiver. Will they go young in the draft or try to get a veteran receiver such as Robert Woods?

Don’t sleep on losing C.J. Mosely either. The Falcons didn’t make the jump to the playoffs with Grady and Julio until they upgraded their pass defense through free agency with the signings of C.J. Mosely and A.J. Bouye.

The last time the Falcons completely remade their team they went from a top 5 pick to back-to-back playoff trips. Will the reshuffle this season allow them to take the next step to winning playoff games or put them back on the couch during the playoffs. Time will tell.
