Zach Kerr & Eagles Defense Shut Down Miami's Offense in Week 2 Victory

Season 62 - Preseason Week 2 - Eagles 19, Dolphins 7

Miami, FL

For the second straight week the Eagles 2nd and 3rd stringers win a preseason game, with all starters benched for the second consecutive game. This is not something that will change, as the coaching staff has already declared the entire preseason will be for the backups and rookies.

The Eagles added a few new players before this game and they got to showcase their talents throughotu the afternoon, let's take a look at some notes from the game.

Offense

-As coach mentioned last week, the halves were split by quarterbacks. Jalen Hurts played the first half, finishing 10 of 21 for 167 yards. Nate Sudfeld played the entire second half, finishing 12 of 17 for 208 yards and 1 touchdown.

-The run game saw more action, as Corey Clement had a team high 12 carries for 38 yards. Newly signed Alex Collins accounted for 14 yards and a touchdown on 6 carries. Boston Scott had 8 yards on 6 carries, and Elijah Holyfield had 15 yards on just 3 touches.

-For the second straight week Jalen Reagor was the top targeted wideout, finishing with 5 catches for 86 yards. He brings his preseason 2 game stretch to 200+ yards. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside had a breakout game, with 135 yards on just 3 catches, including an 85 yard touchdown from Sudfeld

-Rookie wideout Quez Watkins had a preseason high 3 catches for 34 yards. Only 3 wide receivers caught passes in this game

-Tight end Joshua Perkins had another big game, with 60 yards on 4 receptions, while Caleb Wilson had 3 receptions for 15 yards. These two continue to battle for the third tight end spot behind Ertz & Goedert

-The Philadelphia backup offensive line allowed 3 sacks throughout the game

Defense

-Philadelphia's defense allowed 299 total yards in the game, with the lone touchdown coming in the 4th quarter. They allowed just 53 yards rushing

-Starting with the linebackers, rookie Davion Taylor may have just cemented his spot as a starter, with 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 interceptions in the game. Shaun Bradley, another rookie looks to be a shoe-in as well as a starter.

-The competition for MLB is still open, between T.J. EdwardsAlex Singleton, and recently signed Cassh Maluia. Edwards got the start the last two games, and is expected to start in Preseason Week 3

-The star of the game was recently signed defensive tackle Zach Kerr, who accounted for 7 tackles and 4 sacks. Kerr was brought in to compete for the 4th defensive tackle spot in the rotation, along with Cox, Hargrave, and Jackson. Safe to say Kerr will make the roster after this performance

-Anthony Rush (DT) had 2 tackles and a sack as well, giving the Eagles defense 5 total sacks.

-The secondary played well, with cornerback Cre'Von LeBlanc leading the team in tackles with 11, and young safety Rudy Ford catching his first interception of the preseason. LeBlanc is fighting for the third cornerback spot, and Ford is fighting for a backup safety spot

Next Week

Finally the Eagles head home to host back to back preseason games prior to Week 1. Week 3 is considered 'dress rehearsal', but with news of all starters being out, it is business as usual against the Patriots. Expect to see these depth chart battles come to an end in the next two games, as we inch closer to the final 53.
