Here is my interview with Coach Bird.
Me: Hey Coach thanks for joining me today how you doing?
Coach: I’m good Jeff, disappointed but I’m feeling good.
Me: good to hear. So I’m not gonna waste any time so I’m going to get to it.
Coach: fire away.
Me: First thing I want to touch on is the big trade for Von Miller. Other media outlets are ripping you to shreds on this trade saying it was a horrible trade. So what was going through your mind and do you regret it?
Coach: first of I don’t regret any of my moves. I believed from day one that this team could compete for the division title and my thoughts was this secondary and linebackers are a solid group and I thought we were an elite pass rusher away from being competitive. I apparently was wrong and I will take the heat on that but I will never regret adding players I believe that can help us win. Von had a good season but we didn’t do enough to win.
Me: So another heavily scrutinized move was you not playing Tua a single snap during the preseason. So what happened there?
Coach: Well I will always take the advice of our team doctors. He told me he believed Tua’s hip wasn’t ready to go and to play it safe with him. So I chose to play it safe and sat him during the preseason and let Rosen and Fitzpatrick battle it out for the backup position. I would have preferred to have Tua out there getting much needed reps but I want to make sure he is here for the long term. He is 100% right now and will be participating in the preseason.
Me: that great to hear coach. So let’s touch another subject I’m sure you don’t like talking about. The Preston William situation. Do you care to touch on the subject on what happened and how the team is moving forward with him.
Coach: ok I knew this was coming lol. So I won’t go into much details about it but “P Dubya” broke a lot of team rules and we handled it in-house. The situation will never happen again and I have his word. He has been a great teammate since then so we are moving forward and leaving that in the past.
Me: fair enough. So you made 2 trades the last couple days. Bringing in WR Bryan Edwards and sending HB Jordan Howard to Houston. You mind addressing these moves?
Coach: Sure. It was known by most of the league how much I admired Bryan Edwards and how much I was impressed by his work in South Carolina. I know he isn’t the typical speed WR like I used to be but this dude can be a great WR under my tutelage. We appreciate Coach Tiko for send him to us. On to Jordan Howard... he has a history with Coach Staley in Houston and he came to me asking for a trade to rejoin him. So I contacted Coach Staley and he was on board and we made the deal.
Me: interesting. So before I let you go coach. Who do you guys plan on drafting at #3
Coach: you gonna have to wait and see.
Me: ha! Thanks for joining me coach and good luck next season.
Coach: thanks for having me.
