Weekly addition of "Jets Press"

by: Fireman Ed

Blog, NY Post

We had a chance to catch up with the head coach of the NY Jets and get to know him a little better.  Coach Dawgs Mullen is in his first week of the job and his first GFML head coaching gig.  The following is a transcript of the interview we had with him:

Fireman Ed: Coach, it is great to have you here with us today.

Coach Dawgs:  Thanks for having me, it is great to be here!

Fireman Ed: Coach, what did you take from your first game vs the Steelers?

Coach Dawgs:  Well, it was a great performance by our guys.  I thought we played with a lot heart and unfortunately for us, the ending did not go in our favor.  We saw a lot of great things from our guys.  A lot of things we need to clean up, but we will get there.  I loved the effort and intensity in which we played.

Fireman Ed: What were your thoughts about the way Bryce Petty played in his first game with a new offense?

Coach Dawgs: I thought Bryce played very well in the game.  He had one mistake, but he made plays all night that kept us in the game.  This was his first game running our offense and he had a short week to prepare for the game.  He is going to be great for this organization and I was very pleased with his play.

Fireman Ed:  What was the cause of the big plays the defense gave up?

Coach Dawgs:  Well, you have to give a lot of credit to the Steelers and the game plan they had.  Big Ben was great all night and having a guy like Antonio Brown to throw to never hurts.  Our guys will get better, they gave great effort and as they learn the new defense and adjust to the way we call the defense, improvements will come.

Fireman Ed: You have made several roster moves since the game was played, tell us a little bit about your thought process in making those moves.

Coach Dawgs: Well our main focus is to get better and to get better you have to create some cap space.  We came in to a situation where we only had 1M in free cap space.  The GM has told us that no trades will be made until the offseason so for us the only way to free up some cap space is to release current players and sign new guys.  The first moves we made was to release the two kickers we had on the roster and sign a guy in Giorgio Tavecchio who is going to be great for us.  He has a big leg and tons of potential, we were excited to get him on board.  We were able to pick up Daryl Williams to fill out the 53 in that deal as well.  Daryl is going to be a great player for us, you may even see him get some time at one of the guard positions pretty soon.  The next move we made was releasing Breno Giacomini and picking up Cyrus Koundjio.  Cyrus is a young player who will help us down the road and by releasing Breno we have created a little cap space for the offseason.  We have a ways to go before we get where we want to be with the cap space, but you have to start somewhere.

Fireman Ed:  Well coach, it was great to have the chance to sit down and talk with you a little bit.  I hope we can do this again real soon.

Coach Dawgs:  Thanks for having me, we will have to make this a weekly event.  Tons of Fun!
