Jets open the season with road Victory

By Fireman Ed

The New York Jets opened the season with a road win over the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-24.  The Jets coaching staff made the decision to start rookie QB Devin Ward and he had a great debut performance to get the road win.  Ward finished the night 13/19 for 198 yards and 1TD.  He showed his athletic ability on a few key third down runs as well.  Knile Davis had a decent game to open the season rushing the ball 15 times for 60 yards and 1 TD.  Alfred Blue was welcomed back into the mix at the HB spot, he finished up with 28 yards on 3 carries and a TD.  Second year WR Marion Russell had a good game hauling in 4 catches for 89 yards.  The balanced offensive attack kept the Chief defense on their heels during the game and allowed the Jets to jump out early and hang on late for the victory.   The defense struggled at times defending the pass allowing former Jet Geno Smith to throw for 324 yards and 3 TD.  Smith was accurate all day with the exception of his one INT by SS Calvin Pryor.  Pryor intercepted Smith's pass in the redzone and returned it all the way the the Chiefs 30 yard line to set up the opening points for the Jets.  The Jets defensive line got pressure on Smith throughout the game but never was able to record a sack.  The Chiefs could only muster a mere 40 yards on the ground vs a stout front seven for the Jets.  Perhaps a more balanced attack could have yielded more production from the Chief running attack but the score may have dictated some of the second half play calling.  This was a big road win for the Jets especially considering last years home loss to Kansas City 45-0.  Coach Dawgs and company will look to improve to 2-0 on the young season when they travel to play the Bears this week.  The Bears are coming off an impressive win of their own to open the season as they defeated the Packers 24-10.  The Chiefs will look to bounce back next week when they host the Cleveland Browns.
