The New York Jets entered the GFML Draft with 8 selections. The following is a breakdown of those picks round by round.
First Round - The Jets took what was a surprise pick in some peoples eyes with the 14th overall pick in the draft. They selected QB Devin Ward of Ohio State University. "Devin is a guy we really liked from the combine and his pro day. We felt like he was a guy who could come in and challenge for the starting job with Bryce (Petty) and Tyrod (Taylor)," Coach Dawgs said. Ward impressed with his stat line at the combine and graded out at 6.1 which ranked him tied for 1st among QB's.
Second Round - The Jets continued revamping their once aging offensive line with their second round selection of Ryland Clay. The 6' 6" University of Alabama product was the top rated RT in the draft and was projected to be taken in the late 1st round. Clay is projected to start at RT with second year player Will Graham making the move over to LG. "Ryland is a great player and someone who is going to come in a instantly contribute to our football team", Coach Dawgs said.
Third Round - The Jets made another solid pick up in what should be the final piece to the young offensive line. Lance Owens out of UAB was the selection made this time. Owens is another guy who projects to be a starter year one. He will slide right in the LG slot if he can beat out veteran Jah Reid. "Lance is a guy who is going to be a star for us. I think he will see the field very early on and contribute right away," Dawgs said.
Fourth Round - The Jets made their first pick on the other side of the ball picking up DT Nicholas James of Charleston Southern. James was rated the 5th best prospect in the entire draft and looks like he will be the next great on the defensive line for the Jets. "Nick is a guy who can play inside or outside for us. He has great strength to go along with great speed for a big guy," Dawgs said. We look for James to see some snaps this year and compete with the likes of Richardson and McPhee at the DE positions.
Fifth Round - The Jets added to their rushing attack in the fifth round by picking up Dajuan Coleman out of UCLA. Coleman was a guy that was projected to go undrafted but the Jets saw something in the youngster and picked him up. They were so confident with the pick, veteran Doug Martin was released the following day. Knile Davis will still be the #1 back but Coleman should add something the Jets have been missing. Coleman is an explosive runner who also runs with power.
Sixth Round - The Jets went back to the defensive side of the ball and picked up Forrest Clark of Marshall. Clark is projected as a 3-4 pass rush OLB and should see some snaps in relief this year.
Sixth Round - The Jets stayed on the defensive side of the ball and picked up CB D'Antwone Ramsey of N.C. State. Ramsey should see some time as the third CB and on special teams. Ramsey is a great athlete and should continue to improve. He will have a chance to learn from veterans like Revis and Fuller.
Seventh Round - The Jets picked up WR Dion Benson out of Stanford. Benson should be the starting KR/PR to open the season for the Jets. Benson is an explosive athlete and should bring some excitement to the return game.
