We were able to catch up with Coach Dawgs recently, the following is the transcript from that interview.
FE: Coach, we are glad to have you here with us today.
CD: Thanks for having me.
FE: Since taking over as the head coach you have a record of 3-5. 3-0 at home and 0-5 on the road. How do you translate the success at home and start winning on the road?
CD: Well, it is tough to win on the road in this league. We have had our chances and just have not been able to finish games. We are really close to making that happen but we have to keep fighting until the end, those breaks will start going our way. I am pleased with our home record, in this league you have to start by winning your home games. The road wins will come, I feel confident we are moving in the right direction.
FE: How is Bryce Petty progressing? Can he be a franchise QB?
CD: Bryce has played very well at times and struggled at times. He is getting better each day and we will continue to work with him to help make those improvements. I think Bryce can be our QB, he has a very talented arm and just needs to cut down on the mistakes. He will be fine though, we believe in him.
FE: Knile Davis has started to pick it up in recent weeks, what are your thoughts about his recent play?
CD: Knile is a terrific back and he continues to show us that each day. He has everything you want from your starting RB. We have to get him the ball more so he can make those explosive plays for us. We want to get him to the 1,000 yard mark on the season for sure. We are looking forward to having a full season with him next year.
FE: You have shuffled your WR depth chart in recent weeks, what are you looking for from those guys?
CD: Well, to be honest, we want them to catch the damn ball when we throw it to them. We have had too many key drops on third down plays. We have some guys that we really like out there and guys that are capable of making big plays for us. Justin Hunter showed us a little flash vs the Pats here last week but we have to be more consistent at that position. Devin Smith has been banged up but I really think he can be a playmaker for us. We will be looking to add some quality depth at that position in the offseason. We have to give our QB as many options as possible for him to have the success we want him to .
FE: What are you impressions of Jace Amaro?
CD: Jace has played great for us. He has been making some explosive plays for our offense. We are looking for him to continue his development as a blocker in the run game though, we are run first team and we need our guys to be able to block first. He is a great player and we are glad to have him on our team.
FE: The defense has played well at times recently, who have the bright spots been there for you?
CD: Jacquian Williams has been a big part of our success. He has made play after play for us. Sacks, tfl, interceptions, pbu... you name it and he has done it for us. We have a great defense and we need to show that a little more. We have struggled to defend the pass at times this year, and part of that may be the fact that we have shuffled some guys around in the secondary. We are looking to get younger and faster in some spots back there to help defend the teams who spread the field more like you would see in the college game rather than the GFML. Apparently, Chip Kelly has made a major impact on some OC's around the league. We will continue to get better though, I think we have grown a lot over the past 8 games.
FE: Coach, it was a pleasure having you with us today. Good luck the final two games and going in to the offseason.
CD: Thanks for having me, look forward to talking with you again soon.
