For the second week running the Jets played in an OT thriller. The Jets downed the Dolphins with just seconds remaining in the OT period on a 40yd FG by newly signed kicker Giorgio Tavecchio. This game saw its share of lead changes, injuries, and big plays. The Jets were hit hard with the injury bug on the night, losing QB Bryce Petty for the game, Knile Davis for a few series, and Devin Smith is out for the next four games.
The first quarter saw the Jets storm out to an early lead behind strong QB play from Petty. Petty started the game 6-6 for 110 yards and 2 TD's. Before getting injured, Petty was having his second strong performance in a row and finished 8-13 for 137 yards.
The Dolphins would not quit and came back with excellent QB play of their own. Ryan Tannehill was on fire all night and ended the game with 407 yards and 4 TD's. Tannehill spread the ball around to nine different receivers with Greg Jennings leading the way with 102 yards on the night. The Dolphins struggled to run the ball against a stout front 7 of the Jets.
Perhaps the story of the night was Ryan Lindley coming in for an injured Petty and throwing for 212 yards and a big TD. Lindley is no stranger to filling in this year as Petty has been out with multiple injuries on the season.
Another strong rushing performance was put in by the duo of Davis and Doug Martin. Davis finished the night with 13 carries and 47 yards, while Martin finished with 8 carries for 86 yards and a TD.
The Jets secondary was once again torched by an opposing QB. Coach Dawgs said after the game "we will be looking at every guy, nobody's job is safe at this point. We simply must get better with our pass defense. We must get better pressure on the QB to help those guys on the back end out, our front four has to do a better job with that. We will improve, we have to improve".
Tonight marked the second straight OT game for the Jets, this time they came out with the W. Coach Dawgs team is playing with a lot of heart and determination right now. Can they make a late playoff run? Time will tell the story for us.
The Jets will have a BYE week this week, while the Dolphins will host the 49ers.
