The Chargers' front office announced early positive news for upcoming seasons - wide reciever Keenan Allen, halfback Branden Oliver, and offensive guard D.J. Fluker have all signed long-term extensions with the team.
All three players were projected to test free agency after the season, but a talk with the new coaching staff, namely Bob Winuvas, set their minds at ease.
"We talked with all three guys about our plans going forward. They all had good feedback with us, and we were honest with them about our thoughts. I think they appreciated the honesty," Coach Winuvas said in his weekly radio appearance.
Branden Oliver reportedly agreed to a five-year extension worth a little over a million dollars per season. This locks down the #2 halfback spot going forward.
"(Branden) Oliver has great hands and will be a good third down back and spot fill-in for Melvin (Gordon)," Coach Winuvas mused.
Allen signed a four-year extension worth a total of 30 million, with over 8 million in guarantees. Fluker also signed a four-year extension worth almost 9 million total.
This solidifies the core youth going forward on offense. Can Coach Winuvas build up the defense and get this team back into contention sooner? Or will it be much later down the line? Only time will tell.
