49ers Fall To Seahawks In Home Opener

After their week 1 win in Tampa Bay the 49ers played host to their divisional rival Seahawks in what is always a hard fought blue collar, nasty game of football.  The excitement and energy of the home opening crowd was tempered in the 1st quarter when Seattle rookie HB Andrew Felton capped off an impressive drive with a 4 yard scamper to the outside for the 7-0 lead.

Russell Wilson was able to put together effecient drives throughout the game, but was never able to really let it rip on the defense as he is so customary of doing.  The young San Fransisco secondary has held up two weeks in a row now against good passing offenses.  They held Wilson to 225 yards passing and 1 TD while LB Navarrow Bowman made a diving fingertip catch off a tipped pass to give Wilson his only INT of the game. He connected on a 7 yrd TD pass to WR R. Lockette in the second to give the Seahawks a 17-0 lead at halftime.  The 49ers were feeling discouraged at this point especially kicker Jordan Gay, whom the 49ers signed in the preseason.  He had just missed his 3rd FG of the day missing from 53, 46, and 30 yrds away.

Through the entire game Seattle dominated the line of scrimmage against the running game and for two weeks in a row now the Niners running game has been non existent.  Seattle also helped welcome rookie QB Matt Mullins into the NFL by showing him what an elite defense looks like.  Mullins was held to only 81 yrds through the air and throwing no touchdowns or interceptions.  K Jordan Gay got another chance at a FG early in the 3rd, making it to put San Fran on the board.  On the next drive LB Bowman forced a fumble during a sack on Wilson when Niners DL Arik  Armstead scooped up the ball and ran it into the endzone cutting Seattles lead to only seven going into the 4th quarter.

The fourth quarter brought tough defensive football and the 49ers inability to capitalize on any positive plays to build a drive.  Seattle added one more FG and then left Levi Stadium with the win and a 2-0 start to their season.  Meanwhile, the 49ers are left answering questions on just where the hell there running game is?  They start the year 1-1.

Final:  20-10

Notable:  Seattle was penalized 6 times for minus 90 yrds,    Seattle DL Cliff Avril finished with 2 sacks.   49ers MLB Navarrow Bowman finished with 6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble,  and 1 interception.
