Niners Nation presents: Rookie Spotlight #1 pick CB D.J. Woods

CB  D.J. Woods   6'1" 212 lbs. LSU   80 ovr

Hailing from LSU, D.J. Woods is a big, strong, fast lockdown corner.  He already exhibits a pro level-like understanding of man(86) and zone(87) coverage assignments and can matchup physically with any WR in the league.  He has a large frame, standing over 6 feet tall and weighing over 200 lbs, without the drop off in speed one might expect with a kid his size(90spd).  Can press the line of scrimmage better than most in the league right now(87).  He should continue to improve quickly with more time studying the playbook and learning the mental aspects of the game, but all the physical tools are there.

San Francisco took Woods with the first overall pick after deeming him the safest pick in the draft on a pure talent level.  There were many cornerbacks at the top of this draft class that had first round talent written all over them, but the 49ers fell in love with his size and man coverage skills. He also showed a knack for making the big plays late in games while at LSU.
