Roster Moves - Week 14

by Otis Redding

Blogger, San Francisco Chronicle

Coach Winuvas has wasted no time trying to mold the 49ers into an image of his own creation, even with the barren wastes that are free agents available.  Linebacker Michael Wilhoite was brought back into the fold early into week 14's beginning, providing a veteran presence for the middle linebacker position.  The 29 year old still has solid skills overall and good, if not great, athleticism to pair up again with NaVorro Bowman inside.

Tight end Rhett Ellison was signed as well off the street.  The 27 year old out of USC  provides a mean streak in the run game as far as blocking, but does not offer a ton as a pass-catching option.

To make room for the players, linebacker Nathan Stupar and tight end Taylor Thompson were released.

Robert Woods Signs Extension - Finally

After much discussion between both sides, the 49ers and Robert Woods were finally able to come to an agreement on numbers.  Woods signed a 4 year extension for 14 million dollars, with almost 3 million of it guaranteed.

"This was a huge priority for us going forward," Coach Winuvas said of the signing.  "We worked hard to get a deal that was satisfactory for both sides, and we really like having both Robert and Torrey Smith together for a long time in San Francisco."

Kaepernick Working Hard with McDaniels

Colin Kaepernick has heard the criticisms from the coaching staff and fans, and has put in extra time since Coach Winuvas has taken over, attempting to learn the playbook and get on the same page with Josh McDaniels, the offensive coordinator.

"I feel like I can pick this book up and learn it.  I still have to execute on the field, though - that is where I need to prove the doubters wrong," Kaepernick said after Monday's practice.

After a painful 12 of 23 for 101 yard, 3 interception performance, Kaepernick will need to prove over the next 4 weeks with both words and on-field performance that he deserves to stay on the roster.  He is set to make 11.5 million dollars next year, but his season stat line (94/202 for 1264 yards, 7 TD/20 INT, 46.5% completion rate) does not look like it is worth 11.5 million.

Thompson gets start

Running back Juwan Thompson will get his first start in garnet and gold this week against the New York Giants.  Carlos Hyde will be the #2 back this week and will see third down duties.

"Juwan (Thompson) busted a big play for us last week against New England," Coach Winuvas said of Juwan's promotion. "He deserves a shot - nothing against Carlos (Hyde) - we just have to evaluate every position and every player to see who needs to remain and who needs to find another home."

Carlos was upset by the move, but understood that the new regime needed time to evaluate everyone.

"I know what I do," Carlos said.  "They see what I do.  I'll do what I have to do to help the 49ers."
