Week 1 was a tale of two halves as Atlanta fell into a 21-0 hole early on. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson sliced up the defense for 3 touchdowns and a 21-0 lead with 3 minutes left in the 1st half. Atlanta, sensing need for a spark, pulled longtime starter Matt Ryan in favor of young Trevor Seahorn. Ryan has throw two interceptions at this point gifting Seattle a shirt field. Seahorm immediately came in, and tossed a prayer to new addition Keenan Allen paired with a Keanu Neal interception of Russel Wilson resulted in a 10-21 halftime effort swing.
The defenses traded blows for remainder of the third as both quarterbacks struggled to find rhythm in the rainy conditions. The Falcons defense rallied strong sacking Wilson 7 times in a 2 quarter span, however penalties and lack of exclusion resulted in only 2 field goals in 3 red zone trips.
Seattle then hen took advantage of the rainy conditions and forced young quarterback Trevor Serbian to throw a key interception to push the Seattle lead to 24-16. The game stayed there as the Falcons took 3 shots to the end zone only to come up empty.
Time will tell if this is just new coaching woes or simply the coaching struggles Vajgrt has faced in tough games before. His teams are now 2-10 when playing in rainy conditions.
Coach Vajgrt also noted that Matt Ryan will be the starter going forward. However, Seahorn will be given every opportunity should Ryan continue to underperform.
Atlanta will need to rally their red zone offense next week to avoid faking into a 0-2 hole early on.
