Much as the Steelers had feared, this game was decided by quaterback play and once again, their play at the position came back to haunt them. The Steelers ultimately could not overcome five turnovers by rookie quarterback Reggie Evans. Although Evans did show flashes of promise, his accuracy and weak arm, ultimately proved to be the difference as the Steelers fell short 24-21.
The Steelers opened up the game down 14-0 after turnovers on their first two offensive possessions. After getting a touchdown on a pick six from Ulysees Gilbert and a Whitlock rushing touchdown, the Steelers were inside the 5 yard line down 17-14. Unfortunately, Evans was sacked as he was throwing and the ball came out. The Falcons recovered and ended the Steelers chance to tie or take the lead. Later in the 4th quarter the Steelers took a 4 point lead on a 94 yard JuJu Smith-Schuster touchdown to go up 21-17. The Falcons would then drive down the field and score a touchdown with :38 seconds left to take the lead and seal the game.
On offense things weren't all bad. Reggie Evans did throw for 177 yards and a touchdown, but had 3 interceptions and 2 fumbles. He also added 26 yards rushing on 3 attempts. While he is definitely not ready to be a starter in the SML, he has shown that he's worth a roster spot. Roman Whitlock had a solid 80 yards on 10 carries, including a touchdown run.
On defense, the story was all about Ulysees Gilbert III. He led all defenders with 6 tackles and added 1 sack, two interceptions, and a touchdown. The defense was stellar against the run, limiting Terrance McLean to just 23 yards on 12 carries. On a disappointing note, the Steelers will be without starting right end Michael Newks for 6 weeks.
All in all, I think the Steelers will be a team on a mission once they get Josh Rosen back from injury. Sitting at 2-8, I would not be shocked to see them end up winning 3 of the last 6 games.
