Quick Look - SML Observations - SML Chargers

On today's episode we will take a look at the SML Chargers. Bluntburner has been a bottom tier team nearly his entire SML career. Fast forward to Madden 20 and he has been one of the most dynamic teams out there. However, the Chargers currently sit at 1-8. Have the Chargers burned out?

Before we can look ahead we need to quickly take a look at the past. The Chargers smoked their opponents with a strong run game and stingy defense. Blunt made the playoffs two of the first four seasons. The other two seasons Blunt was in the hunt.

1-8 is clearly not in the hunt. What has changed? Blunt's sole victory thus far was a Week 2, 28-17 win over the Packers (Lawyer). Key stats to keep in mind; 5-8 147 yds 0 tds 0 ints passing, Gordon 16 carries 158 yards and 1 td.

As we dive further into Blunt's game reviews he has yet to replicate that success. Gordon currently has 122 carries for 624 yards and 4 tds. In totality not bad numbers. However, this does not tell the whole story. In each loss Gordon has not topped 100 yards once. In several instances Gordon was held to under 50 yards on the ground.

Another "tale of the tape." has been the inept passing game. Season totals Sam Darnold is 86 of 155, 55.5%, for 1792 yards, 12 tds, 23 sacks, and 16 ints. While not the worst numbers in the league by any means but not good enough to make a playoff run.

The last category to look at that may be the biggest downfall for Blunt this season has been his defense. Blunt's defense is routinely getting smoked like a blunt at a Snoop Dogg concert. The Chargers are giving up an astounding 32 ppg (31st), 322.7 total yds (20th), been solid agasint the pass 177.6 yds (6th) but, getting gouged with the run ranking dead last with 145.1 yds per game. The Chargers are 29th in the league in sacks with 17. They are 6th in league in fumbles with 4. Blunt is dead last in ints with 4.

We all know the game has changed a lot since launch. Every update makes a player have to adapt. Some players seem unphased others never seem to get back on track. How can Blunt right the ship?

The advice section is always a no brainer but the stats don't lie. Blunt has to find a way to run the ball more effectively on offense. One way of opening up the running lanes is to fire away in the passing game. Is Sam Darnold the answer? I have not watched any of Blunt's games this season. Speaking from previous encounters and looking at the stats. Blunt may need to dial back the blitz and play a heavier zone scheme. Also with the exception of Bosa the Chargers front 7 is average at best. Blunt needs to shore up that part of the roster with a shot in the arm via FA and/or Draft.

Hopefully Blunt can get back on track this season or the only bowl he will be smoking in is the one on his table. What did you guys think? Do you want to see more content like this? Let me know!
