In week 3 , it was a rainy day as the game kicked off , and both teams dreaded playing in the rain. The Vikings were determined to bounce back after last weeks poor showing eventhough they luckily got the win. On the opening drive , the Chargers went 3 and out. The Vikings then got down the field and stalled out on their 32 , and had to settle for a field goal to go up 0 -3 . On the next drive , Rivers under pressure, throws a int to SS Harrison Smith. On the next play HB McKinnon ran the ball for a 48 yard run for a Touchdown to go up 0-10 . Then the Chargers got a couple of first downs but then stalled and had to punt yet again, as rookie HB Gordon just could not get going. Things were looking to swing the Vikings way at this point. However the defense for the chargers stepped up and caused Teddy Bridgewater to fumble the ball on a sack by DT Darius Philon and LOLB Melvin Ingram picked it up and ran it in for a touch down making it 7-10 and all the sudden , the Chargers are back in it.
After this though, things never got better for Rivers. As he ended up throwing 5 more ints in the game. Some due to being under pressure, and throwing on the run. Some just due to really good defensive plays by the Vikings secondary. Including a spectacular one handed streched out grab for an interception.HB McKinnon had his best game this year and ended the night with 131 yards on just 14 carries. Something the Vikings head coach has been waiting to see out of him, since they traded away fan favorite AP to the Colts in the preseason. "We need McKinnon to do well, as we really rely on our run game and without AP , we need someone to step up. We do like all of our halfbacks we have on hand though and trust them all to do well. So we tend to split carries between our guys . If one seems to be having success against a team, we will surely stick with them alittle more that game. Our defense has been strong thus far and has really kept us in games , as our offense for the most part has struggled to get going. We have got to do a better job on offense" coach Pdizel said after the game.
Both teams recorded 2 sacks each in the game. The killer for the Chargers was they only converted 12% of their 3rd downs . While the Vikings wasnt alot higher at 38% still a big difference in the game as was the turnovers. The chargers had 1 fumble on top of the 6 ints thrown by Rivers, while the Vikings had 1 int and 1 fumble that was returned for a touchdown. Overall a very low penalty game though , the Chargers had 1 penalty for 8 yards, while the Vikings had 2 for 15 yards.
The chargres go up against the 0-3 Browns, as both teams are looking for their first win. The Vikings face off against the Broncos who are looking really strong right now and a very tough opponent for the Vikings. They hope they can continue off the momentum they have built off of this game tonight.
