The Houston Texans led by QB DeShaun Watson and DE J.J. Watt, met the New England Patriots led by QB Tom Brady this Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. DeShaun Watson threw for 216 yards and 1 touchdown and Lamar Miller rushed for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Texans to a 33-9 victory over the Patriots.

Watson completed 18 of 25 passes for 193 yards and connected with TE Ryan Griffin for his lone touchdown. Watson said he wasn’t satisfied with how he performed. “I don’t think we played anywhere near where our capabilities are” he said. “All of us probably look at the game and realize we could have done things better”. Watson, who missed the final 9 games of last season with a torn right ACL struggled to move the team in the first quarter but bounced back in the second half with the help of a strong running game and a stellar defense.

Lamar Miller ran 23 times for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns while D’Onta Foreman added 28 yards and a touchdown on 5 carries. It was a career game for Miller, as the veteran didn’t go over 75 yards rushing in any games last year. “Our O-Line did a tremendous job blocking all day and that created huge space for me to do my moves” Miller said. Coming into the season Offensive Line was the biggest concern for this team but they did a good job run blocking while allowing 4 sacks.

It was a quiet day for star WR DeAndre Hopkins as he manged only 10 yards on 1 reception. WR Bruce Ellington was the lead receiver with 87 yards while WR Will Fuller V added 51 yards. TE Ryan Griffin scored the only receiving touchdown in the game. Asked if there is any particular reason Hopkins was limited to just 1 reception Coach Born said “simply the game flow dictates that”.

On the Defensive side DE J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney both recorded a sack each and DB Tyrann Mathieu was a beast in the secondary. He finished the night with 4 tackles and a force fumble while playing a key role in limiting star TE Rob Gronkowski to 11 yards on 2 receptions. Newly acquired LB NaVorro Bowman also shined with 4 tackles and an interception in the red zone.

Next up for the Houston Texans is an away game at the Tennessee Titans before they come back for the home opener against the New York Giants.
