5 Impactful Offensive Rookies
Matthew Smith, WR- Nebraska. Selected by the Patriots
Austin’s offense was lacking a true burner last year, but he made a fantastic pick selecting
Matthew Smith in the late 2nd round. Smith was overlooked due to his thin frame and meh hands. He’s already a fantastic deep threat, but if he can work on his hands and overall route running, he could be one of the best in the league, let alone his draft class. I’m not excited to face this guy twice a year. (Watch out for his teammate Tyquan Blake as well. The Patriots may have gotten a pair of stars out of this draft)
Cam Rich, QB- Oklahoma State. Selected by the Vikings
Cam Rich is one of the better quarterbacks coming out of the draft in recent memory. He has an absolute cannon to go along with solid enough mobility to get him out of sticky situations. He's relatively raw when it comes to accuracy, but he’s a true playmaker and can put the team on his back when needed. The Vikings didn’t seem to have an answer at qb last year after the surprising release of Kirk Cousins, but they lucked out with Rich falling into their laps. The teams ahead of him will regret passing on this guy; mark my words.
George Tate, RB- Boise State. Selected by the Bills
George Tate is an absolute MONSTER in the weightroom. It was reported that he was bench pressing and squatting more than some of his linemen. After selecting him in the draft, the Bills now realize those reports weren’t wrong. Tate is a physical specimen… in a straight line. He needs to work on his agility if he ever wants to be truly dominant, but he has all the tools to be a 3 down back.
Norman Fletcher, QB- LSU. Selected by the Saints
In a shocking move, the Saints moved on from MVP candidate Jameis Winston this past offseason. No one knew who the starter was in New Orleans, but the mastermind himself, Daniel “I’m just throwing to the open man” Rainone, had a plan all along. Norman Fletcher was a fantastic pick in the middle of the 1st. He is one of the more raw QBs in the draft, but he has a fantastic arm and is a smart kid. He lacks the speed you’d want in your franchise QB, but it shouldn’t be a problem as long as he gets the ball out quickly.
J.C. Duff, OL- Utah. Selected by the Dolphins
I don’t have much to say about Duff, being an OL, but he was the best one in the draft and it's a miracle he fell as far as he did. The Dolphins got themselves a good one here.
5 Impactful Defensive Rookies
Jalen Daniels, CB- Michigan. Selected by the Rams
Daniels is an athletic freak whose only downside is his height. He sometimes struggles in MCV, but he makes up for it with his blazing speed. Daniels is one of the best players to come out of this draft. Look for him to be in DROTY contention.
Nate Barrington, EDGE- West Virginia. Selected by the Bears
Barrington was a bit of a surprise pick on the surface since the Bears defense is filled with pass rushers, but the more I think about it, the more I love this pick. Barrington is relatively weak in the run game, but he’s got the size and the pass rushing moves to be an elite pass rusher in the near future. Did I mention he’s only 21? The sky’s the limit for Barrington. The only thing stopping him is the loaded Bears Defense.
3. Isaiah Jones, MLB- Boston College. Selected by the Football Team
Jones is even more of a freak than Daniels out of Michigan. He runs a 4.4 40 at 6’1, 240lb. I don’t know about you guys, but I wouldn’t wanna be tackled by this guy. His on field production is fantastic, but he isn’t the best in the classroom. He needs a coaching staff that can motivate him to be his best or else he could fall off the wagon.
Justin Toone, MLB- Maine. Selected by the Chiefs
Toone was once seen as a long shot to make the roster, but his camp has been terrific and reports out of Kansas City say he has true superstar potential. He’s very quick in a straight line, but his agility needs some work if he ever wants to be good in coverage. This kid could be the surprise of the draft if he’s developed correctly.
Tyrone St. Louis, FS- Texas. Selected by the Chargers
There are a lot of athletic freaks in this draft and St. Louis is just another example. He’s 6’4 and runs a sub 4.5 40. He flew around the field at Texas and he should continue his play with the Chargers. He needs some work when it comes to his tackling, but he’s a ball hawk and a playmaker. That Chargers secondary gets even more dangerous with this addition.
