A New Era The Buccaneers made a huge splash in the offseason to acquire Chris Godwin from the Buffalo Bills to become their clear-cut number 2 option. However, they were surprised when in the 3rd round of the NFL draft, a diamond in the rough fell to them in WR Shakiel Lawrence. The Buccaneers immediately knew that he was the perfect number 2 to play alongside Juju Smith-Schuster, and began aggressively fielding offers for Chris Godwin. In the final hours before the start of the 2020 season, the Buccaneers splashed in a blockbuster trade with the Rams to land Todd Gurley to be the bell cow for the offense. The offense will rely heavily on Russell Wilson, Juju Smith-Schuster, and Todd Gurley. The offseason also made a big free agent signing in Jonathon Ogden, who decided to come out of retirement for one last chance at another super bowl. It is clear that he will enjoy blocking for the best running back in the league. After the hectic offseason, the Buccaneers were ready to get the season off to a hot start. They hosted the Minnesota Vikings at home to start the season. They started the game off hot, with Todd Gurley running down the field and scoring his first touchdown as a Buccaneer on the first drive. It was a back and forth game with the Vikings, but the Buccaneers eventually won with a last second 24-yard chip shot field goal to win 17-16. This game was too close for comfort for Musical Brick, who said he intends to not allow games to slip away this year like they did last. The Bucs were lucky to pull out the win against the tough Vikings team, but will need to be crisper going forward if they want to contend for a championship. |
